MessageBird’s current plans and checkout are under the Bird name. If you want to pay for Bird Email, SMS, WhatsApp or Voice with a Coinepay virtual card, first decide which product you need: each has its own plan, rather than one subscription covering the whole account. This guide walks through account setup, card checkout and the checks to make if payment does not go through.
What you need before checkout
- A Bird account: Sign up with a work email address you can access for verification.
- A Coinepay virtual card: Register with Coinepay and complete identity verification before using card services. Once issued, your virtual card has a card number, expiry date and CVV. You can manage it in the Coinepay app or 24/7 self-service dashboard.
- Your real billing details: Have the billing address and VAT status applicable to your organization ready. Enter accurate information in both services; do not use an invented address to try to change checkout eligibility.
- Enough available funds: Check the amount Bird asks you to pay, and allow for any applicable tax or other amount shown at checkout. Check your card’s available balance and relevant card settings in Coinepay before submitting payment.
You can register for Coinepay or use its iOS app or Android app. Card issuance and fund services are provided by licensed partner financial institutions. Availability can vary by jurisdiction.
Choose the right Bird product and plan
Open Bird’s official pricing pages and select the product you intend to use. Email has Free, Startup, Growth and Scale tiers. SMS, WhatsApp and Voice each offer Pay as you go, Startup, Growth and Scale. Check the product and destination-specific pricing page immediately before buying: usage charges can differ by channel, message type and destination, and additional charges may apply.
At the time of writing (October 2026), Bird’s published Email pricing showed Free at $0 and Startup, Growth and Scale at $15, $250 and $1,000 per month, respectively, in USD. The paid amounts are spendable monthly wallet deposits, not bundles of included emails; paid-plan sending is charged from the first email. Email Free included 1,000 emails per month, capped at 50 per day. These figures may change, so verify the current terms on Bird’s official Email pricing page before checkout.
Do not assume an older MessageBird Email allowance applies to a new purchase. Bird designates earlier plans with included allowances and overage as Legacy. Also, a destination pricing page showing USD rates does not establish what currency your own checkout will charge. Review the actual checkout amount and wallet currency.
Sign up for Bird and pay by card
- Create your Bird account. Go to Bird’s official site and sign up with your work email. Follow the emailed verification link or enter the six-digit code if prompted. A password-and-verification-link sign-up flow is also documented.
- Review the organization setup. Bird assigns an organization to a US (us1) or EU (eu1) data region during sign-up. If Bird offers you a choice, check it before confirming: Bird says the region cannot be changed afterward.
- Open the plans page for your product. Compare the Email, SMS, WhatsApp or Voice options you actually need. Select Choose plan for that product, then Continue to payment. An existing Bird account may require an Owner or Billing admin to manage billing settings.
- Check the billing information. Enter your real billing address and VAT status as requested. Review the selected product, amount and any tax shown before providing card details.
- Enter your Coinepay card details. Retrieve the card number, expiry date and CVV from Coinepay, and enter them in Bird’s card checkout. Complete any verification step presented by the payment flow. Do not close the checkout while a verification request is still in progress.
- Confirm the result. A paid Bird plan starts only after full payment succeeds. Check the product plan and payment status in Billing and payments → Overview; do not treat a submitted card form or a Payment pending state as confirmation that the plan is active.
Bird says a plan can be paid by card or another instant method offered for its wallet currency. An existing wallet balance or a bank transfer cannot pay for a current plan at checkout. If you leave checkout unpaid, Bird makes it available under Outstanding payments for up to seven days. Return there to review the amount and try an eligible payment method rather than creating duplicate purchases.
Adding funds is different from buying a plan
If you use pay-as-you-go services or need wallet funds for usage, go to Billing and payments → Overview and choose Add funds. Bird’s documented card top-up starts at 15 units of the wallet currency. A pro forma invoice offers a separate bank-transfer top-up route, but that route is not immediate. Topping up a wallet is not a substitute for paying a current product plan at checkout.
Overview also shows product plans, balance, payment methods and billing address. Bird places the billing contact and subscriptions under Settings; Owners and Billing admins manage these settings. Review any saved default card: Bird uses it for automatic top-ups and current-plan renewal attempts. Adding a card may cause a temporary bank authorization, which is distinct from a completed plan payment.
If your card is declined or the plan stays pending
Bird documents a flagged status for a saved card whose last charge declined, but does not provide a dependable list of card-decline messages for every checkout. Start with the status you can see, then investigate the likely cause:
- Insufficient available balance: Recheck the full checkout amount, including any tax shown, against the funds available to your Coinepay card. If the issue is with pay-as-you-go sending instead, inspect Bird’s wallet balance. Bird documents insufficient_balance as a WhatsApp sending rejection reason; it describes a wallet/send issue, not a card-issuer decline.
- Billing address mismatch: Compare Bird’s billing address with your real cardholder billing details and correct any errors. Check the organization’s VAT information separately. Avoid repeated attempts with different or invented addresses.
- 3-D Secure or another verification step: If checkout asks you to authenticate, follow the on-screen instructions and check for an approval request associated with your card. If the step expires or cannot be completed, start a fresh payment attempt from the outstanding checkout and contact Coinepay support if you need help with the card-side verification.
- Merchant region or eligibility checks: Confirm your organization’s real country, billing details and intended sending destinations are eligible under Bird’s current rules. Bird notes that sanctions, legal and routing restrictions can block particular markets. Do not try to bypass a regional restriction; ask Bird about its checkout or service eligibility and Coinepay support about your card.
If payment remains Payment pending, check Outstanding payments and avoid assuming the product is active. For a flagged saved card, review its details under Billing and payments → Overview. When contacting support, provide the time, amount, product, status and any exact error text, but never send your full card number or CVV in a support message. If a renewal is not fully paid by its renewal date, Bird says that product returns to Free where available, or otherwise to pay-as-you-go.
Manage or cancel the plan afterward
Check Billing and payments → Overview for the product plan, wallet balance and payment method, and Settings for subscriptions. If you cancel a current product plan, Bird says the change takes effect at the end of its paid period; it does not issue a partial-period refund. A funding deposit already credited remains in the wallet. Bird’s terms generally treat paid fees as non-refundable and do not generally require a refund of prepaid balance, subject to the applicable agreement and law. Check your plan and order terms before relying on any unused balance remaining available indefinitely.

FAQ
Can I pay for a Bird plan with my existing wallet balance?
No. Bird says current plans require a card or another instant method offered for the wallet currency; wallet balance and bank transfer cannot pay for a current plan.
Where can I retry an unfinished Bird checkout?
Look under Outstanding payments. Bird keeps an unpaid checkout there for up to seven days.
Does insufficient_balance mean Coinepay declined my card?
Not necessarily. Bird documents insufficient_balance as a WhatsApp sending rejection caused by wallet funds, not as a card-issuer decline reason.
What happens if I cancel a paid Bird product plan?
Cancellation takes effect at the end of the paid period. That product then returns to Free if available or otherwise to pay-as-you-go; Bird does not provide a partial-period refund.
