You can try using a Coinepay virtual card to pay for a Costco membership or online order, but Costco’s payment rules depend on the country and what you are paying for. A card accepted for an online order may not be eligible for membership auto-renewal. This guide starts with U.S. membership sign-up, then explains the checks to make before paying and what to do if a payment fails.
What you need before you start
- A Coinepay account: Register and complete identity verification before using card services. Your virtual card number, expiry date and CVV are available after the card is issued. You can manage the card in the Coinepay app or self-service dashboard.
- Your real membership details: Use your legal name and accurate contact and billing information. If you are applying for a Business Membership, have the business details Costco requests.
- A suitable Costco site: Membership options, payment methods and online-shopping rules differ by country. Use the Costco site for the market where you are eligible to apply; do not change your address or location details to bypass a restriction.
- Enough available funds: Allow for the membership price, applicable tax and any other amount shown at checkout. Check your card’s available balance and relevant settings in Coinepay before submitting payment.
If you have not opened a Coinepay account, you can register here. Check the app or contact Coinepay support if you need to confirm a card setting or whether your card meets a particular Costco payment requirement.
Choose the right Costco membership and payment route
In the United States, Costco offers Gold Star Membership for individuals and Business Membership for businesses. Either can be upgraded to Executive Membership. At the time of writing (October 2026), Gold Star and Business cost US$65 annually; the Executive total is US$130 annually, plus applicable sales tax. Check Costco’s official membership page for current prices before paying.
Options elsewhere are not identical. At the time of writing (October 2026), Canadian Gold Star and Business memberships cost C$65 annually, while Executive costs C$130, plus applicable taxes. In the UK, Gold Star costs £42 and Executive Gold Star costs £84 annually, including VAT. The UK also offers a £42 Online-only Membership that does not allow warehouse shopping; warehouse membership has qualification requirements. In Japan, individual Gold Star and business Business memberships cost ¥5,280 annually, including tax. Check the relevant official Costco membership page for current prices, eligibility and options.
Check the payment rule for your exact transaction. U.S. membership auto-renewal accepts Visa credit or debit cards and Mastercard debit cards. Canadian auto-renewal accepts Mastercard credit cards and Visa credit or debit cards. Japan specifies Mastercard only for online membership payment; it also offers pre-registration followed by payment at a warehouse. These rules do not form a single worldwide list for new-membership checkout. If a rule specifies a card network or card type, contact Coinepay support to confirm your card meets that requirement before you buy. Do not assume that acceptance for shopping also means acceptance for membership or renewal.
How to buy a U.S. Costco membership online
- Prepare your Coinepay card. Sign in to the Coinepay app or dashboard, review the available balance, and have the virtual card number, expiry date and CVV ready. Keep these details private.
- Go to Costco’s official U.S. membership page. Select the Personal or Business route, then choose Gold Star or Business Membership. Select the Executive upgrade if you want it. Review the current fee and any applicable tax.
- Complete the primary-cardholder application. Enter your real name and the other information Costco requests. Creating a Costco.com shopping account by itself does not purchase a membership.
- Review the checkout. If Costco offers card payment for your application, enter your Coinepay virtual card details and your accurate billing information. Check the total and any renewal selection before submitting. Payment acceptance depends on Costco’s checks and the card’s eligibility for that checkout.
- Keep the confirmation. After a successful U.S. online purchase, Costco emails your membership number. Physical membership cards are collected at a warehouse; they are not mailed as part of this online sign-up process.
If you are signing up outside the U.S., follow the application and payment instructions on your local Costco site rather than assuming its screens or accepted cards match Costco.com. For example, Japan’s online membership payment has a Mastercard-only rule.
Paying for Costco orders is different from paying membership fees
Costco’s accepted methods vary by checkout channel. U.S. warehouses list Visa cards among their payment options, while Costco.com also lists Mastercard. In Canada, warehouses list Mastercard among their options, while Costco.ca lists Mastercard and Visa. These shopping lists do not override the separate membership auto-renewal rules.
Online shopping can also have location requirements. Costco.ca permits online shopping only for Costco Canada and U.S. members with valid cards. Costco.com says a member from outside the U.S. may order for delivery to a U.S. shipping address, but should not enter an international membership number online; it requires a U.S. or Canadian billing address for U.S. deliveries. Use only billing and delivery details that genuinely belong to you and meet Costco’s rules. A virtual card does not remove those requirements.
How to manage U.S. membership auto-renewal
After your membership is active and your online account is verified, go to Sign In / Register → Account → Renew Membership on Costco.com to add, select or remove a renewal card. Check the eligible-card rule before adding your Coinepay card: U.S. auto-renewal accepts Visa credit or debit cards and Mastercard debit cards. Ask Coinepay support to confirm whether your card meets the applicable rule; Costco makes the final payment decision.
In the U.S., Costco charges the selected card on the first day of the renewal month. If you want the membership to expire instead, remove auto-renewal at least three business days before that day. Turning off auto-renewal stops future automatic charges; it does not immediately cancel your membership. In Canada, an eligible auto-renew card is also charged on the first day of the renewal month. UK members can change auto-renew settings in their online account, and Costco says it gives notice 15 days before processing a renewal payment.
Troubleshoot a declined card or cancelled order
First, identify whether the problem happened during a new membership application, an online order, renewal or card-saving step. Costco publishes different requirements for each, so an error in one channel does not establish what went wrong in another.
- Insufficient available balance: Compare the card balance with the final amount, including any tax shown at checkout. Add funds through the options available in Coinepay or use another eligible payment method, then retry only when the balance is sufficient.
- Billing details do not match: Re-enter your genuine billing name and address exactly as associated with the payment details. Costco identifies mismatched billing information as one possible reason a Costco.com order is cancelled during authorization. Also check the card number and expiry date for typing errors.
- Card authentication or security step fails: If checkout asks for 3-D Secure or another issuer authentication step, follow the on-screen instructions and keep the app available for any prompt. Do not assume every Costco checkout uses the same authentication flow. If a required step never appears or fails repeatedly, contact Coinepay support. Costco also notes that unsupported card security requirements can prevent a card from being saved in Costco Wallet.
- Card or region is ineligible: Check the rule for your country and transaction. For example, Japan specifies Mastercard for online membership payment, and the U.S. Digital Membership Card’s saved payment setup requires a Visa credit or debit card with a U.S. billing address. That Digital Membership Card rule is not a general rule for all Costco payments. Contact Coinepay support to confirm whether your card meets a stated requirement before trying again.
- An online order is cancelled during authorization: Besides incorrect details, Costco cites an issuer’s internet-transaction limit as a possible cause for Costco.com orders. Review applicable controls in Coinepay or ask support for help. These are order-checkout possibilities, not a confirmed list of new-membership error messages.
If you are unsure whether Costco charged you, check your Coinepay transaction activity and Costco confirmation before submitting the same payment again. For a Costco membership or order status question, contact Costco through its official support channels; for a card authorization question, contact Coinepay support.
If you need to cancel a U.S. membership
Removing your auto-renew card is not the same as cancelling membership. In the U.S., the Primary Member can request cancellation at a warehouse membership counter or call Costco at 1-800-774-2678. Costco says it refunds the membership fee if a member is dissatisfied. Check Costco’s current instructions for your country if your membership was purchased elsewhere.
