You can use a saved billing method on Upwork to pay for eligible freelancer memberships and Connects, or for client payments. This guide explains how to prepare a Coinepay virtual card, follow Upwork’s checkout steps, and investigate a declined charge. Card acceptance depends on Upwork’s requirements and the checks applied to your payment.

Choose what you need to pay for

Upwork has different purchases for freelancers, agencies, and clients. Joining is free, so you do not need to buy a membership just to create an account. Check the amount shown in your own Upwork checkout before confirming.

  • Freelancers: Freelancer Basic has no monthly membership fee. Freelancer Plus includes 100 Connects per month and cost $19.99 per month on Upwork.com at the time of writing (October 2026). Additional Connects cost $0.15 each at that time. Check Upwork’s official pricing page for current amounts.
  • Agencies: Agency Basic is free but cannot buy agency Connects. Agency Plus permits Connects purchases and cost $19.99 per month at the time of writing (October 2026). Check Upwork’s official pricing page before upgrading.
  • Clients: Client Basic has no monthly membership fee, but payments to freelancers can carry Marketplace and contract-initiation fees. Business Plus has no fixed monthly membership fee; its fee is tied to freelancer payments. Review the fees displayed for your account and contract before paying.

Upwork lists its main prices in USD. If an eligible client card payment is displayed in a local currency, a checkout conversion may be an estimate rather than the final billed rate. Do not assume that a displayed conversion is a fixed local-currency subscription price.

Prepare your Coinepay card and Upwork account

  1. Set up Coinepay: Register for Coinepay and complete identity verification before using card services. Your virtual card’s number, expiry date, and CVV are available after issuance in the Coinepay app or self-service dashboard. Check the app for the information you need about your card and available funds.
  2. Create the appropriate Upwork account: On Upwork, sign up as a freelancer if you will buy a membership or Connects for yourself, or set up the appropriate client account if you will pay talent. Agency purchases require an agency account. Use your real identity and accurate account details.
  3. Check the card requirement: Upwork says it accepts cards on the Visa, Mastercard, Discover, American Express, Diners Club, and Diners Club International networks, including eligible prepaid cards. It lists JCB and Union as examples of networks it does not accept. Do not assume your Coinepay card meets a particular network or other merchant requirement. Contact Coinepay support to confirm your card meets the requirement before you buy.
  4. Enter genuine billing details: Keep your Upwork name, billing address, and postal code accurate. Enter the card number, expiry date, and CVV exactly as shown for your card, and use the real billing details associated with it. If you are unsure which details to use, ask Coinepay support rather than trying a different address.

Availability matters as well as card details. Upwork restricts service in certain locations and does not currently support Syria; it has also suspended operations in Russia and Belarus. Follow Upwork’s location rules and your local requirements. A different card cannot remove an account or regional restriction.

Pay for Freelancer Plus or Connects

  1. Sign in to your freelancer account on Upwork.com. To upgrade, select your profile icon → Membership plan → Change Plan → Upgrade to Plus.
  2. Review the membership terms and amount. If you have a valid promo code, apply it at checkout before selecting Upgrade and Pay. Freelancer Plus is charged when you upgrade and renews monthly.
  3. If you need to add your card first, open Account settings → Billing & Payments and follow Upwork’s prompts to add a billing method. Check the saved details before returning to your purchase.
  4. For Connects, choose the purchase offered in your Upwork account, review the quantity and total, and confirm only when the displayed amount is correct. You can manage freelancer subscription changes under Memberships & Connects.

Upwork applies sufficient freelancer earnings to a membership or Connects purchase first. If those earnings do not cover the whole purchase, Upwork charges the saved billing method for the whole amount; you cannot combine a partial earnings balance with a card for one purchase. If you expected a card charge but do not see one, check the payment details in Upwork before attempting the purchase again.

For an agency upgrade, use profile icon → Membership plan → Change Plan → Upgrade to Plus in the agency account. If an agency on Agency Basic sees “Failed to load Connects transaction details,” check its membership: Agency Basic cannot buy agency Connects.

Pay freelancers as a client

In a client account, add or review your payment method under Account settings → Billing & Payments. When funding or paying for a contract, follow the checkout shown for that contract and review the freelancer payment, applicable fees, and total before confirming. Upwork’s available client billing methods depend on eligibility and location.

If you are a client-account admin considering Business Plus, the path is Account settings → Membership → Upgrade membership → Confirm. That change takes effect immediately. Business Plus does not replace the need to review the fees shown on each freelancer payment or new contract. Client membership changes are managed under Membership.

Troubleshoot a declined or blocked card payment

Do not repeatedly submit the same details without checking the cause. Start with the message in Upwork, then compare it with the card and account information available to you.

  • Insufficient available funds: Check the available amount in Coinepay against the full Upwork charge, including any displayed fees. For a freelancer purchase, a partial Upwork earnings balance cannot cover part of a purchase while your card pays the rest.
  • Card or billing-detail mismatch: Recheck every digit of the card number, the expiry date and CVV, plus your real name, billing address, and postal code. Upwork documents incorrect details as a reason payments fail.
  • Authentication or 3-D Secure: If checkout asks you to verify the payment, complete the legitimate authentication prompt. If it times out or fails, check for any instructions in Coinepay and contact support for help with that attempted charge. Do not assume that a declined payment was caused by 3-D Secure if Upwork gives a different reason.
  • Merchant, issuer, or region checks: Upwork may reject an inactive card, a card subject to an issuer block, or one that does not meet its accepted-card rules. Its service and payment options also vary by location. Confirm your account location and card eligibility with the relevant support teams; do not change your location or billing details to get around a restriction.

If Upwork shows “An error occurred while subscribing to the selected membership” and your Freelancer Plus subscription is billed through Apple, check the subscription in your Apple Account rather than repeatedly trying to change that Apple-billed plan on Upwork.com. In Myanmar, Upwork says freelancers cannot currently add a billing method, though they can use a sufficient reserved earnings balance for eligible membership or Connects purchases.

Manage renewals and avoid an unwanted charge

To stop a website-billed Freelancer Plus renewal, go to Memberships & Connects → Change Plan → Switch to Basic before the renewal date begins at midnight UTC. Upwork says already-paid freelancer membership fees are non-refundable; downgrading keeps the paid plan active through the current billing period. Canceling on or after the renewal point does not avoid that cycle’s charge.

If you subscribed through Apple, manage cancellation in Apple Account → Subscriptions. At the time of writing (October 2026), Upwork stated that Freelancer Plus purchased through Apple cost $27 per month, rather than the $19.99 website price; check the current price in the relevant checkout. Apple decides eligibility for Apple-billed refund requests, and requesting a refund does not itself cancel renewal.

A client admin can request a Business Plus downgrade, which takes effect after the current 30-day membership cycle. Before changing plans or payment methods, review any active contracts and upcoming charges in Upwork. For questions about your virtual card or a Coinepay-side payment issue, contact Coinepay support; for an Upwork account restriction or contract charge, contact Upwork through your account.

FAQ

Can I pay for Freelancer Plus with a Coinepay virtual card?

You can enter a virtual card as an Upwork billing method, but acceptance depends on Upwork’s card requirements and payment checks. Confirm your specific card’s eligibility with Coinepay support before buying.

Why did Upwork charge my card instead of my freelancer earnings?

Upwork uses earnings only when they cover the entire membership or Connects purchase. Otherwise, it charges the saved billing method for the whole amount.

Where do I change my Upwork billing method?

Open Account settings → Billing & Payments in Upwork to review or update a billing method.

How do I cancel Freelancer Plus?

For a website-billed plan, use Memberships & Connects → Change Plan → Switch to Basic before the renewal date begins at midnight UTC. For an Apple-billed plan, use Apple Account → Subscriptions.
