Booking.com is one of the largest travel platforms for hotels, apartments and rental cars. A common point of confusion is what you actually pay for: its loyalty program, Genius, is free, while the money you spend goes toward the travel reservations themselves. This guide explains how to set up a Coinepay virtual card, use it at Booking.com checkout, and what to do if a payment is declined.

What you are actually paying for

Booking.com does not charge a subscription to join Genius. As checked in October 2026, the official tiers are Genius Level 1, Genius Level 2 and Genius Level 3, and none of them carry a membership fee:

  • Level 1 is unlocked immediately with a free account and gives eligible stays and rental cars a 10% discount before taxes and fees.
  • Level 2 unlocks after five completed bookings within two years, with 10–15% discounts on eligible stays and cars plus breakfast or room upgrades at select properties.
  • Level 3 unlocks after fifteen completed bookings within two years, with up to 20% off eligible stays, 10–15% off cars, select-stay extras and priority support.

So you are not buying a plan — you are paying for a specific hotel, apartment or car reservation, and the Genius discount simply lowers eligible prices automatically. Taxes and fees still apply. Always confirm the exact price on the official Booking.com page, since rates change by region and property.

What you need before you book

  • A verified Coinepay account. Register at Coinepay and complete identity verification (KYC) before you create a card; card services require this step.
  • A Coinepay virtual card issued from your dashboard or the Coinepay app (iOS / Google Play). You will see the card number, expiry date and CVV instantly.
  • Enough balance on the card to cover the reservation, taxes and fees, plus any pre-authorisation hold the property may place.
  • Your real billing details — the name and address registered to you. Use your genuine information so the card and the reservation match.
Booking.com determines which cards are accepted at the moment of checkout, and some properties set their own rules for cards accepted on arrival. There is no single global card list for every consumer booking. If you are unsure whether your card meets a property's requirement, contact Coinepay support to confirm the details before you book.

Step 1: Create or sign in to your Booking.com account

Go to Booking.com and create an account with your email address, or sign in if you already have one. Signing in before you search matters: eligible Genius discounts appear automatically on blue-labelled options, with no code to enter. Your Genius level is tied to your account, so always book while logged in.

Step 2: Search and pick a stay

Enter your destination, dates and guests, then review the results. Look for options marked with the blue Genius label if you want the discount. Before you select, open the room or rate details and check three things that vary from booking to booking:

  • Payment timing — depending on the reservation, payment may be collected online now, online later, or at the property.
  • Cancellation policy — free cancellation windows, no-show fees and non-refundable rates differ by property.
  • Price breakdown — the room price, taxes and any fees shown for your dates.

Step 3: Enter your Coinepay card at checkout

  1. Fill in the guest details for the reservation using your real name.
  2. In the payment section, choose to pay by card. Booking.com shows the card types it accepts for that specific booking on the payment screen.
  3. Enter your Coinepay virtual card number, expiry date and CVV exactly as shown in the app.
  4. Enter the billing address that matches your Coinepay profile.
  5. Review the total and the payment-timing note, then confirm.

If the rate is "online later" or "pay at the property," Booking.com may store the card to guarantee the booking rather than charging it immediately. In that case, keep the card funded through your stay dates so the eventual charge or any pre-authorisation can go through.

Where saved cards live

If you use Booking.com for Business — a separate, free business-travel platform — company cards are managed under Administration → Payment, and personal cards under My profile → Payment methods. For a standard consumer account, add or update your card during checkout; the universal path to consumer billing settings can change, so follow the on-screen options in your account.

Troubleshooting: why a card gets declined

Booking.com and its payment partners document several payment failures, including generic payment_refused, insufficient funds, exceeded limits, expired or blocked cards, invalid card number or payment method, a failed CVC check, and missing or invalid strong authentication. These are the underlying reasons; the exact wording on your screen may differ. Work through the causes below.

Insufficient balance

Make sure the card holds enough for the full total plus any hold the property places. Top up in the Coinepay app and retry. Remember that "pay later" bookings still need funds available when the charge lands.

Billing address or name mismatch

The billing details at checkout must match the information on your Coinepay profile. A mismatched address, postcode or name is a frequent cause of refusal. Correct any typos and try again.

3-D Secure / strong authentication

Many card payments require an extra verification step. If you see an authentication error, complete the approval prompt from your Coinepay app or dashboard, then resubmit. Keep the app open while you pay so you can approve promptly.

Expired, wrong or blocked card details

Re-check the card number, expiry and CVV against the live values in the Coinepay app. If you regenerated or replaced the card, use the current details.

Limits

If the booking exceeds a spending limit you set on the card, raise the limit in the Coinepay app or use a card with enough capacity, then retry.

Merchant or property rules

A specific property may accept only certain card types online or on arrival, and acceptance can vary by region. This is set by Booking.com and the property, not by Coinepay. If a particular rate keeps failing, try another eligible rate or property, and contact Coinepay support if you want help confirming your card details.

Cancellations and refunds

Because Genius has no subscription charge, there is nothing to cancel or refund on the membership side. For a travel booking, cancellation fees, no-show fees and refund eligibility depend on the policy shown during booking and repeated in your confirmation email. Read that policy before you confirm, and keep the confirmation for your records. Refunds are returned to the card used, so keep your Coinepay card active while any refund is pending.

A note for business travellers

If you manage trips for a team, Coinepay lets businesses issue dedicated virtual cards with custom spending limits per card. You could, for example, assign one card per traveller or per project to keep travel spend organised and reconciled. Set this up from your Coinepay dashboard before booking.

Get help

For card issuance, verification, balances or authentication prompts, reach the Coinepay team through support or the Telegram channel. For questions about a specific reservation, rate or property policy, use Booking.com's own help channels listed in your confirmation.

FAQ

Is there a Booking.com subscription I pay for with a card?

No. The Genius loyalty program (Levels 1, 2 and 3) is free to join, so there is no membership charge. Your Coinepay card is used to pay for actual travel bookings — hotels, apartments or rental cars — plus taxes and fees.

Will my Coinepay virtual card work on Booking.com?

Booking.com decides which cards it accepts at checkout for each specific booking, and individual properties set their own rules for cards accepted on arrival. There is no single global list. Enter your real card and billing details, and contact Coinepay support if you need help confirming your card meets a property's requirement before you book.

Why was my card declined at checkout?

Common causes include insufficient balance, a billing address or name that doesn't match your Coinepay profile, an unfinished 3-D Secure authentication, exceeded spending limits, or incorrect card details. Fix the specific issue in the Coinepay app and retry.

When will the card be charged?

It depends on the rate you pick. Payment may be collected online now, online later, or at the property. Check the payment-timing note on the room details before confirming, and keep the card funded through your stay dates so any later charge or hold succeeds.

How do refunds work if I cancel a stay?

Genius has no fee to refund. For a travel booking, cancellation fees, no-show fees and refund eligibility follow the policy shown during booking and in your confirmation. Any refund is returned to the card you paid with, so keep your Coinepay card active while it is processed.
