WeChat Pay — known inside the app as Weixin Pay and operated for cross-border receipts through Tencent's TenPay Global platform — is one of the most widely used ways to receive money in mainland China. With Coinepay Global Remittance you can send a cross-border transfer that is credited in Chinese yuan (CNY) to a recipient's Weixin Pay account. This guide explains what you need from the recipient, how the send flow works, how your recipient collects the money, and what to do if something goes wrong.

Before you start, make sure you have registered and completed identity verification (KYC). You can create a Coinepay account and manage everything from the 24/7 dashboard or the Coinepay app on iOS and Google Play.

Where WeChat Pay is used and what currency arrives

WeChat Pay / Weixin Pay is used in mainland China, and inbound remittances are paid out in CNY. When money arrives through the TenPay Global cross-border channel, it can usually be credited either to the recipient's Weixin Pay wallet balance or to a bank card linked to their Weixin Pay account. These are distinct choices, so "mobile wallet" does not always mean a balance top-up — your recipient decides how they want to collect during the first receipt flow.

What you need from your recipient

Accuracy here matters more than anything else, because the details must match the recipient's registered Weixin account exactly. Ask them for:

  • Full name exactly as registered with Weixin Pay. If the Coinepay flow requests Latin characters, enter the name in Latin letters as shown on their ID.
  • Registered mobile phone number tied to their Weixin account, including the country code. This is the number the collection notification is sent to.
  • Their transfer purpose context — common supported purposes on Weixin routes include categories such as salary, savings or family support, and some purposes require the recipient to confirm a relationship or provide a payroll declaration.

Rather than guessing, ask the recipient to open the remittance mini-program inside Weixin and share the exact details it generates. A wrong name or phone number is the most common reason a transfer cannot be collected.

Step by step: send to WeChat Pay with Coinepay

  1. Open Coinepay and go to Global Remittance in the dashboard or app.
  2. Choose the destination: select China and CNY as the payout currency.
  3. Select the payout method: choose the mobile wallet / Weixin Pay option for the recipient to receive into their wallet balance or linked bank card.
  4. Enter the recipient details: full name exactly as registered, the registered mobile number with country code, and the transfer purpose. Double-check every field against what the recipient sent you.
  5. Review the rate and fees: Coinepay shows the exchange rate, fees and any delivery estimate before you confirm. Read this summary carefully — nothing is charged until you approve it.
  6. Confirm and pay. Once you confirm, the transfer is submitted for processing.
  7. Track the transfer using the status updates in your Coinepay dashboard or app.

All transfers are subject to identity verification, sanctions screening and local regulations. Coinepay may ask you for supporting documents, such as the purpose of the payment or the source of funds, before a transfer is released.

How your recipient sees the money arrive

For a first receipt, the recipient typically gets an SMS or in-app link that walks them through collection. They can also open Weixin, search for 跨境汇款 微汇款 (Tenpay Global Remittance), choose 我要收款 ("Receive Transfers") and create a Recipient Card to collect the funds.

First-time collection usually requires the recipient to:

  • Complete identity and phone verification.
  • Choose a receiving method (wallet balance or a linked bank card) — even a balance recipient may need to bind a bank card.
  • Agree to a service agreement.
  • Provide additional information required under local rules (effective September 2022), such as residence area and occupation, and confirm a relationship or provide a declaration where the transfer purpose requires it.

Collection is time-sensitive. On some routes the collection link expires (for example after 48 hours on certain providers), and an unfinished transfer is cancelled and returned. Encourage your recipient to complete collection promptly after they receive the notification.

Wallet limits and verification levels

Weixin Pay personal accounts are classified by verification level, and China's central-bank rules cap the amount that can be spent from the account balance depending on that level — broadly, a low tier allows only a small lifetime balance-spend, with higher tiers allowing more per year once the account is more fully verified. These balance-spending caps are separate from any inbound remittance limits, which differ by sending route. A recipient whose wallet is only lightly verified, or who has reached a limit, may need to upgrade their verification or receive into a linked bank card instead.

Coinepay shows the applicable details for your transfer in the live flow before you confirm. If a limit or verification level affects your recipient, the clearest fix is for them to complete the required verification in Weixin or choose a different receiving method.

Troubleshooting

Wrong phone number or name mismatch

If the recipient name or registered phone number does not match the Weixin account, collection can fail and the transfer is typically refunded automatically after the collection window closes. Ask the recipient to share the exact details from the remittance mini-program and send again with corrected information rather than guessing.

Recipient did not get a notification

Have them check their SMS and spam, confirm the phone number you used, and open the Tenpay Global Remittance mini-program in Weixin to find the incoming transfer and create a Recipient Card manually.

Wallet limit reached

If the recipient has hit an inbound or balance limit, they may need to wait, raise their verification level, or receive into a linked bank card. Confirm the applicable limit and purpose inside the live transfer flow.

Unverified or lightly verified wallet

A first-time recipient must complete identity and phone verification, choose a receiving method and sign the service agreement before funds release. Ask them to finish every step in the collection link.

Compliance or document review

Transfers can be held for sanctions screening or review, and Coinepay or the payout partner may request documents such as the purpose or source of funds, or the recipient may be asked for a relationship confirmation or payroll declaration. Respond with accurate information promptly. Never split a transfer, use a third party or misstate details to avoid checks — doing so can cause the transfer to be cancelled.

FAQ

What details do I need to send money to a WeChat Pay account?

You need the recipient's full name exactly as registered with Weixin Pay and their registered mobile number including the country code. Ask them to share the exact details from the Tenpay Global Remittance mini-program in Weixin rather than guessing.

Will the money arrive in the WeChat wallet balance or a bank card?

Inbound remittances to Weixin Pay can be credited to the wallet balance or to a bank card linked to the recipient's account. The recipient chooses the receiving method during the first collection, and even a balance recipient may need to bind a bank card.

What are the fees and exchange rate?

Coinepay shows the exchange rate, fees and any delivery estimate on screen before you confirm the transfer. Nothing is charged until you approve that summary, so review it carefully.

What happens if I enter the wrong name or phone number?

A mismatched name or phone number can prevent collection, and the transfer is typically refunded automatically after the collection window closes. Correct the details using what the recipient generates in Weixin and send again.

Why is my recipient asked for extra information when collecting?

Under local rules, first-time recipients must verify their identity and phone, choose a receiving method, sign a service agreement and provide details such as residence area and occupation. Some purposes also require a relationship confirmation or payroll declaration.
