Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ) is a Swiss German-language news publisher with several digital and print subscription tiers. If you want to read it from abroad and pay with a Coinepay virtual card, this guide walks you through what you need, how to create an account, how checkout works, and what to do if your card is declined.
Coinepay issues virtual cards with an instant card number, expiry date and CVV that you can use for online subscriptions like NZZ. You manage everything from the Coinepay dashboard or mobile app. Before you start, remember to use your real name and billing details so your card and the NZZ account match.
What you need before you start
- A verified Coinepay account. If you do not have one yet, register with Coinepay and complete identity verification (KYC) first. Card services are unavailable until KYC is done.
- A Coinepay virtual card with enough available balance for the NZZ plan you want, plus a small margin for any temporary authorization.
- Your card number, expiry date and CVV, visible in the Coinepay app or dashboard.
- An email address for your NZZ user account (NZZ-Benutzerkonto).
- Your real billing address, which you will enter at checkout.
NZZ's payment FAQ lists Visa and Mastercard, alongside PayPal and TWINT, for monthly subscriptions ordered through nzz.ch/abo. For annual subscriptions it additionally allows PostFinance Card (for an initial order) and invoice; monthly subscriptions cannot use invoice or e-bill. Coinepay does not publish which card network or issuing country applies to your specific card. If a plan accepts only certain card types, contact Coinepay support to confirm your card meets the requirement before you buy.
Choose your NZZ plan
NZZ names three digital tiers: NZZ Kompakt, NZZ Digital and NZZ Pro. Kompakt permits seven articles per week, Digital excludes Pro content, and Pro includes it. There are also print and E-Paper options (NZZ Print, NZZaS Print, combined offers), an NZZ Pro Add-on for an existing digital subscription, and an NZZ U30 Abo for readers up to their 30th birthday (age verification required). NZZ's FAQ also mentions NZZ Pro Multi for up to three simultaneous accesses.
At the time of writing (October 2026), prices differ by region. On the CHF-priced international offers page, NZZ Kompakt is listed at CHF 19/month, NZZ Digital at CHF 32/month or CHF 320/year, and NZZ Pro at CHF 54/month or CHF 540/year. On NZZ's Germany-specific page, NZZ Digital is listed at €18.90/month or €189/year and NZZ Pro at €29.90/month or €299/year, with NZZ International Print at €62/month or €676/year. NZZ publishes distinct Germany and international offers, so the prices and the page you see depend on where you are. Always confirm the current price and terms on the official NZZ subscription pages before ordering.
| Plan | What it includes |
|---|---|
| NZZ Kompakt | Seven articles per week |
| NZZ Digital | Digital access without Pro content |
| NZZ Pro | Digital access including Pro content |
Step 1: Create your NZZ account
- Go to nzz.ch and select Anmelden (Sign in).
- Choose Ich habe noch kein Konto (I don't have an account yet).
- Enter your email address and confirm it using the link NZZ emails you. That confirmation link lasts 24 hours, so act promptly; if it expires, request a new one.
NZZ also offers an email-code sign-in without a password, which is handy if you prefer not to set one.
Step 2: Select the plan and term
- Open the NZZ subscription page for your region.
- Pick your plan (for example NZZ Digital or NZZ Pro) and choose monthly or annual billing. Remember that monthly subscriptions cannot be paid by invoice or e-bill.
- Select Jetzt bestellen (Order now) to proceed to checkout.
Step 3: Pay with your Coinepay virtual card
- When prompted for a payment method, choose the card option (Visa/Mastercard).
- Open the Coinepay app or dashboard and copy your virtual card number, expiry date and CVV.
- Enter the card details and your real billing address exactly as they appear in your Coinepay profile.
- Complete any 3-D Secure confirmation step your card requires, then submit the order.
NZZ explains that on an initial card or PayPal order it first authorizes and reserves the payment, which it states is not a charge; the actual charge replaces the reservation when the order begins. Keep enough balance on your Coinepay card to cover both the reservation and the first charge.
Step 4: Confirm and manage your subscription
After ordering, sign in to your NZZ-Benutzerkonto. The account area includes navigation entries for Zahlungsmittel (Payment methods), Rechnungen (Invoices) and Abonnemente (Subscriptions). NZZ says subscribers can change their payment method and Visa/Mastercard details there, which is useful if you later issue a new Coinepay card. Note that if you are an NZZ Pro subscriber, you may also see access to features such as the FragNZZ beta introduced in October 2026.
Troubleshooting: card declined
NZZ's payment FAQ does not publish a list of card-decline messages, so if an order fails, work through the common causes below. You can check and resolve most of these from the Coinepay app.
Insufficient balance
Make sure your Coinepay card has enough funds for the plan price plus the temporary authorization NZZ places on initial orders. Top up and try again if the balance is low.
Billing address mismatch
The billing address you enter at NZZ checkout must match the address registered to your Coinepay card. A mismatch is a frequent reason for a decline. Verify it in your Coinepay profile and re-enter it carefully.
3-D Secure verification
Many European checkouts require 3-D Secure confirmation. Make sure you can receive the approval prompt through the Coinepay app or your registered contact method, and complete it before the session times out.
Card type or region checks
NZZ's FAQ explicitly names Visa and Mastercard; American Express, Discover, Apple Pay and Google Pay are not listed there. NZZ also publishes separate Germany and international offers, so the page and accepted methods can vary by region. If your card is declined on a type or region check, confirm with Coinepay support that your card is suitable, and use the correct regional NZZ offer page for where you actually are. Do not try to disguise your location or use details that are not your own.
Authorization expired
NZZ notes that an authorization can expire if an order cannot be processed. If that happens, restart the order from the subscription page rather than resubmitting the old session.
Cancellation and changes
NZZ says cancellation takes effect at the end of the paid term and must reach its service team at least five days before that term ends. Digital subscriptions can be cancelled in the account, while print cancellations go through service. Early termination and withdrawal of a remaining balance are not possible; when changing certain subscription types, NZZ credits an already-paid balance toward the replacement. If you no longer want NZZ to bill your Coinepay card, cancel within NZZ before the renewal date rather than relying only on the card.
Get the Coinepay app
Manage your virtual card, balance and billing details anytime from the iOS app or Google Play app. For help with a payment, reach the team via support or Telegram. Some services are not available in every jurisdiction, and services related to virtual assets are not available to residents of mainland China.

FAQ
Which cards does NZZ accept for a subscription?
NZZ's payment FAQ lists Visa and Mastercard, along with PayPal and TWINT, for monthly subscriptions ordered through nzz.ch/abo. Annual subscriptions additionally allow PostFinance Card (initial order) and invoice. If you are unsure whether your Coinepay card qualifies, contact Coinepay support before ordering.
How much does an NZZ subscription cost?
Prices vary by region and plan. At the time of writing (October 2026), the international CHF page lists NZZ Kompakt at CHF 19/month, NZZ Digital at CHF 32/month and NZZ Pro at CHF 54/month, while the Germany page lists NZZ Digital at €18.90/month and NZZ Pro at €29.90/month. Always confirm current prices on NZZ's official subscription pages.
Why was my Coinepay card declined at NZZ checkout?
Common causes are insufficient balance for the price plus NZZ's initial authorization, a billing address that doesn't match your Coinepay profile, an incomplete 3-D Secure step, or card-type/region checks. Fix the detail in the Coinepay app and retry, or contact Coinepay support.
Will NZZ charge my card immediately?
NZZ says that on an initial card or PayPal order it first authorizes and reserves the payment, which it states is not a charge; the actual charge replaces that reservation when the order begins. Keep enough balance on your Coinepay card to cover both.
How do I change the card NZZ bills or cancel?
Update your card under Zahlungsmittel (Payment methods) in your NZZ-Benutzerkonto. To cancel, note that cancellation takes effect at the end of the paid term and must reach NZZ at least five days before it ends; digital plans can be cancelled in the account.
