Khan Academy’s standard lessons are free, so you do not need a card to use them. If you want a paid Khanmigo subscription, you can enter virtual card details during its checkout. This guide explains the eligibility rules, the sign-up steps, and what to check if your Coinepay card payment does not go through.
Check which Khan Academy service you need
Start by distinguishing a paid Khanmigo subscription from Khan Academy’s other offerings. Independent learners, parents, and teachers can use the standard Khan Academy learning platform for free. Khan Academy Kids is also free for families and individual teachers. Neither requires a Khanmigo payment.
Khanmigo’s individual pricing page lists three options:
- For Teachers: A free option. Khan Academy’s help center calls this Khanmigo Teacher Tools; it does not include the paid Parent or Learner features.
- For you: A paid option that the help center also calls the Learner plan.
- For families: A paid option that the help center also calls the Parent plan. A parent subscription can provide access for up to 10 connected children under 18.
At the time of writing (October 2026), the Khanmigo pricing page lists both paid options at $4 per month or $44 per year, excluding sales tax. Check Khanmigo’s official pricing page for the current amount and terms before selecting a billing period. Paid subscriptions renew automatically until canceled.
Eligibility matters before payment: Paid Parent and Learner Khanmigo plans require an adult in the United States with a billing address in one of the 50 states or Washington, D.C. Do not enter an address that is not yours or try to work around this rule with a different location. The free teacher offering has a wider geographic reach, but that does not make paid plans available outside the stated U.S. market.
What to have ready before checkout
- A Khan Academy account: You can create one during Khanmigo sign-up or sign in to an existing account. Use an email address you can access for confirmation and later billing management.
- The right plan and billing period: Decide whether you need the Learner or Parent features, then review the monthly or annual amount displayed at checkout, including any applicable tax.
- A Coinepay account and card: Register with Coinepay and complete identity verification before using card services. Coinepay issues virtual cards with a card number, expiry date, and CVV, which you can view in its dashboard or mobile app.
- Sufficient available funds: Check the amount shown by Khanmigo at checkout and the funds available for the card in Coinepay. Allow for the full displayed charge rather than relying on the plan’s pre-tax price.
- Your real billing details: Enter your own name and billing address accurately. For a paid Khanmigo plan, that address must also meet Khanmigo’s U.S. eligibility rule.
Khanmigo’s terms discuss payment by credit or debit card. Contact Coinepay support to confirm your card meets this requirement before you buy. You can also check the payment options actually displayed at Khanmigo checkout; do not assume an option is available merely because its payment processor supports it elsewhere.
How to sign up and pay for Khanmigo
- Visit the Khanmigo site and choose a plan. Select For you or For families if you want a paid subscription. If you are a teacher seeking the free option, choose For Teachers instead; that path does not require a paid Khanmigo subscription.
- Create or sign in to your Khan Academy account. Follow the account prompts and provide the details requested for your selected plan. If choosing the Parent plan, follow Khan Academy’s instructions for connecting eligible children rather than creating accounts on their behalf with inaccurate information.
- Review the checkout. Confirm the selected plan, monthly or annual billing period, total charge, and any terms presented. Khanmigo subscription payments are processed by Stripe. The checkout, not a general list of Stripe capabilities, determines which payment options you can use.
- Enter your Coinepay virtual card details. Retrieve the card number, expiry date, and CVV from your Coinepay dashboard or mobile app. Type them into the corresponding checkout fields and enter your genuine billing name and address. Check every digit and address field before submitting.
- Complete any required payment verification. If checkout asks you to authenticate or take another security step, follow the on-screen instructions. Keep the relevant Coinepay app or dashboard available so you can respond to any verification request that applies to your card.
- Confirm and check your email. Accept the applicable terms and submit the purchase only after reviewing the total. Khan Academy’s sign-up guidance says to expect an email confirmation. If the page stalls or you do not receive confirmation, check your account and payment activity before trying again so you do not accidentally submit a second purchase.
Use your own account and payment information throughout. A card cannot make an ineligible location eligible for a paid Khanmigo plan.
If the card payment is declined
A decline does not, by itself, identify the cause. Khan Academy does not publish a verified list of Khanmigo-specific card error messages, so use any message shown at your checkout as a clue rather than assuming a particular reason. Work through these checks before making another attempt:
- Insufficient available funds: Compare the available amount in Coinepay with the full checkout total, including any tax. If funds are insufficient, add funds using the options available in your Coinepay account and check the balance again before retrying. Do not repeatedly submit the same payment without addressing the shortfall.
- Card entry or billing-address mismatch: Recheck the card number, expiry date, CVV, name, and address for typing errors. Use your real billing details. If your genuine address does not meet Khanmigo’s U.S. requirement, do not substitute another address; a paid Parent or Learner subscription is not the appropriate option.
- 3-D Secure or another authentication step: If you see a verification prompt, complete it within the checkout flow. If a prompt does not arrive, expires, or fails, check your Coinepay app or dashboard for applicable instructions and contact Coinepay support if you cannot complete the step. Whether authentication is requested can vary by transaction.
- Merchant region or card-type checks: Khanmigo restricts paid Parent and Learner access to eligible U.S. adults with qualifying billing addresses, and its terms contemplate credit or debit cards. Verify your own eligibility and contact Coinepay support to confirm whether your card meets the merchant’s card requirement. Neither a successful card entry nor a funded balance overrides Khanmigo’s policies.
If the checkout gives a specific error, save its wording and the time of the attempt, but do not share your full card number or CVV in a support message. Contact Khan Academy support about account eligibility or checkout issues; contact Coinepay support about your card or a verification step. If you see a charge but no subscription, check your Khan Academy account and confirmation email before paying again.
Manage billing, renewal, and cancellation
After subscribing, sign in to Khan Academy and go to Settings → Khanmigo → Manage your subscription on Stripe. Enter your account email there and use the Stripe login link sent to it. The billing portal lets you update billing details or payment methods, download receipts, and manage cancellation. If you replace a card, update the payment method before the next renewal and verify that the new details were saved.
To cancel through Khan Academy, use Settings → Khanmigo → Cancel Khanmigo Subscription and confirm the cancellation. Do so before the renewal date: a charge may already have occurred if you cancel on that date. Cancellation generally keeps Khanmigo access active through the current paid period. Subscriptions are generally nonrefundable and do not receive credit for a partially used period, though Khan Academy may consider exceptions case by case.
A recurring donation to Khan Academy is separate from a Khanmigo subscription. Do not use the Khanmigo billing steps to manage a donation: donations started on or after September 2022 can generally be managed under GoFundMePro → Recurring Donation → Manage Donation; for an older donation, contact Khan Academy’s donation support.
Paying for a school instead?
Individual Khanmigo checkout is not the same as a school purchase. Khan Academy Districts lists Enterprise Starter for up to 1,000 U.S. student licenses and Enterprise for larger purchases. At the time of writing (October 2026), Enterprise Starter is listed at $10 per student per year; check the official schools pricing page for current terms. Starter purchases are completed online by credit card, and purchase orders or requisitions are not accepted for that tier. If you are buying for a school, confirm the applicable card requirement with Coinepay support before attempting that checkout. Khan Academy Kids for Schools is a separate, quote-based offering, not an individual Khanmigo subscription.
