Süddeutsche Zeitung (SZ) is one of Germany's largest national newspapers, and its digital subscriptions give you access to SZ.de, the SZ-Magazin, and the E-Paper edition. If you want to pay with a Coinepay virtual card instead of a German bank account, this guide walks through what you need, how the SZ checkout works, and what to do if a payment is declined.
Before you start
A Coinepay virtual card comes with an instant card number, expiry date and CVV, which you enter at the SZ checkout like any other card. A few things to get ready first:
- Register and complete KYC. You need to create a Coinepay account and finish identity verification before card services are available. Services related to virtual assets are not available to residents of mainland China, and some services are not offered in every jurisdiction.
- Fund the card. Make sure your card balance covers the plan you choose plus any country-specific VAT, which SZ adds for EU residents.
- Know your billing details. Use your real name and billing address exactly as they appear in the Coinepay app. SZ displays American Express, Mastercard and Visa on its payment page.
SZ says its displayed private digital-subscription prices apply regardless of your country of residence, so you do not need a German address for a digital plan. Note that the device-and-subscription bundles are a different matter and are limited to consumers resident in Germany.
Choosing an SZ plan
SZ's digital price list is dated 1 January 2026. Prices are published in euros; always confirm the current figure on SZ's own pricing page before you order, as offers change. At the time of writing (October 2026), the main digital options are:
| Plan | What it covers | Regular price |
|---|---|---|
| SZ Plus Basis-Abo | SZ.de and SZ-Magazin.de articles | €19.99/month (€14.99 first 12 months for new subscribers) |
| SZ Plus Wochenende-Abo | Adds the Friday and Saturday digital newspaper | €29.99/month (€24.99 first 12 months) |
| SZ Plus Komplett-Abo | Monday–Saturday digital newspaper and E-Paper | €49.99/month (€34.99 first 12 months) |
| SZ Plus-Tagespass | One-day pass | €4.99 |
| Komplett test | Four-week trial | €0.99 |
Student and U30 pricing is cheaper (€9.99 Basis, €14.99 Wochenende, €24.99 Komplett) but requires proof of enrollment or age. There is also a standalone SZ E-Paper-Abo and professional SZ Pro options. Pick the plan that fits you before heading to checkout.
Step-by-step: subscribe and pay
- Open the plan page. On the official Süddeutsche Zeitung site, select the SZ Plus plan or trial you want and start the order.
- Create your SZ-Login. New digital subscribers create an SZ-Login with an email and password at the start of ordering, then confirm the activation link that SZ emails you. If you already subscribe, you can link a login using your customer number and surname.
- Enter your personal and billing details. Use the same name and address that are on your Coinepay account.
- Select card as the payment method. SZ lists SEPA direct debit, credit card, bank transfer/invoice and PayPal; which options appear depends on the subscription and are shown at checkout. Choose the card option and enter your Coinepay card number, expiry and CVV.
- Review on "Daten prüfen". SZ's checkout lets you correct your information on the "Daten prüfen" (check your data) step. Confirm the plan, price and billing address here.
- Submit with "Zahlungspflichtig bestellen". This button places the binding, paid order. Complete any 3-D Secure confirmation if prompted (see below).
- Confirm activation. SZ notes that its emailed receipt is not itself the contract acceptance: a digital subscription is accepted through SZ's confirmation, while a day pass is concluded when successful payment is confirmed. Watch for the confirmation and activate your access.
If your card is declined
SZ's published payment guidance does not spell out specific card-decline messages, so a refusal usually comes from the payment processor or your card issuer rather than from SZ itself. Work through these common causes:
Insufficient balance
Recurring plans bill every month, and SZ adds country-specific VAT for EU residents, so the charge can be slightly higher than the headline price. Top up your Coinepay card so it covers the full amount and retry.
Billing address or name mismatch
If the name or address you typed at SZ does not match your Coinepay card record, the payment can fail an address check. Re-enter the details exactly as they appear in the Coinepay app and use the "Daten prüfen" step to correct any typo before submitting.
3-D Secure verification
Card payments may trigger a 3-D Secure confirmation step. Approve it through the method tied to your Coinepay account and keep the Coinepay app handy so you can respond to any verification prompt. A timed-out or dismissed prompt reads as a decline.
Merchant or region checks
SZ's digital prices are stated to apply irrespective of residence, but individual payment methods can have their own geographic rules, and that coverage is not fully documented. If a specific method is unavailable, the account area may offer a different one. SZ does not publish whether it restricts debit or prepaid cards, and whether any particular merchant accepts a given card is not something that can be assumed in advance. If you are unsure your card will qualify, contact Coinepay support to confirm your card meets the requirement before you buy.
General retry tips
- Double-check the card number, expiry and CVV for transposed digits.
- Try a second time after a short wait; a temporary processor error can clear.
- If one SZ payment method keeps failing, see whether another listed option (for example PayPal) is offered for your plan.
- Reach Coinepay support or message us on Telegram to check the card status, and SZ's own help pages for order issues.
Managing and cancelling your subscription
Billing and subscription management live under Konto & Abo at abo.sueddeutsche.de. You can update your payment details there, but a new method applies to future bills, not to a charge that is already open. If a card expires, replace it before the next billing date.
For cancellation, a test subscription can be stopped during its test period so it ends when the trial is over; afterward the ordinary terms apply. Under SZ's terms, an indefinite subscription concluded since 1 March 2022 can be cancelled on one month's notice, and SZ accepts cancellation online or in text form, including email. SZ also states a 14-day withdrawal right for digital subscriptions from the contract's conclusion, with repayment within 14 days of your withdrawal notice, potentially less a proportional charge for service already supplied at your request. Digital subscriptions cannot be paused or refunded for partial periods of use.
Manage your card in the Coinepay app
Everything on the Coinepay side is handled from the 24/7 self-service dashboard and the mobile app for iOS and Android. There you can check your balance before a renewal, review transactions, and see the exact amount SZ charged. Card issuance and fund services are provided by licensed partner financial institutions.

FAQ
Which SZ plan should I pick to read articles online?
The SZ Plus Basis-Abo covers SZ.de and SZ-Magazin.de articles. At the time of writing (October 2026) the regular price is €19.99/month, with €14.99/month for a new subscriber's first 12 months. Confirm the current price on SZ's official pricing page before ordering.
Do I need a German address to subscribe with a Coinepay card?
For digital plans, no. SZ states its private digital-subscription prices apply regardless of your country of residence, adding country-specific VAT for EU residents. Device-and-subscription bundles, however, are restricted to consumers resident in Germany.
Why was my Coinepay card declined at SZ checkout?
Common causes are insufficient balance (remember VAT is added), a billing name or address that does not match your card record, an unconfirmed 3-D Secure prompt, or a payment-method restriction. Fix the detail and retry, and contact Coinepay support if it continues.
Will the Coinepay card definitely be accepted by Süddeutsche Zeitung?
SZ's payment page displays American Express, Mastercard and Visa, but it does not publish whether it limits debit or prepaid cards, and acceptance cannot be assumed. Contact Coinepay support to confirm your card meets any requirement before you buy.
How do I cancel or get a refund?
Manage your subscription under Konto & Abo at abo.sueddeutsche.de. Indefinite subscriptions concluded since 1 March 2022 can be cancelled on one month's notice, and SZ allows a 14-day withdrawal right for digital subscriptions, with prepaid amounts for later periods refundable under its terms.
