Microsoft OneNote is a digital note-taking app in the Microsoft 365 family. The first thing to understand is that OneNote itself has no separate paid subscription: the supported versions are free to use, and a free Microsoft account includes 5 GB of OneDrive storage. The extra desktop-app features and larger cloud storage come bundled with an eligible Microsoft 365 subscription. So when people ask how to "pay for OneNote," they usually mean paying for a Microsoft 365 plan that includes it. This guide shows how to do that with a Coinepay virtual card and how to handle a declined payment.
What you need before you start
Gather a few things so checkout goes smoothly:
- A Coinepay account with identity verification (KYC) completed. If you are new, register with Coinepay and finish verification first, then create your virtual card. Download the app from the App Store or Google Play.
- Your virtual card number, expiry date and CVV, which appear in the Coinepay app the moment the card is issued.
- Enough balance on the card to cover the plan plus any local tax Microsoft adds at checkout.
- A Microsoft account (or be ready to create one during checkout).
- Your real billing address. Microsoft may require a billing address in the Store's country, and the address you enter must match your card records.
Microsoft lists credit cards, debit cards and PayPal for Store checkout, and its account-payment help also mentions bank accounts and mobile-phone billing, but it states clearly that available methods differ by region and by what appears at checkout. The specific card networks accepted for a consumer Microsoft 365 purchase are not published, so if you are unsure whether your Coinepay card qualifies, contact Coinepay support to confirm your card meets the requirement before you buy.
Which plan includes OneNote?
Not every Microsoft 365 tier adds the OneNote desktop benefits. Here is how the consumer options line up:
- Free OneNote — no subscription needed; included with a free Microsoft account.
- Microsoft 365 Personal, Family and Premium — include the OneNote desktop apps. Family and Premium cover up to six people, though AI features belong to the subscription owner.
- Microsoft 365 Pro — an additional consumer tier that lists OneNote; it is monthly-billing only on the US pricing page.
- Microsoft 365 Basic — a paid storage-and-services tier that does not add the OneNote desktop benefits listed for Personal.
At the time of writing (October 2026), US prices were Personal $9.99/month or $99.99/year, Family $12.99/month or $129.99/year, Premium $19.99/month or $199.99/year, and Pro $99.99/month. Prices differ by region — for example, in Germany the one-person tier is officially named Microsoft 365 Single at €10/month or €99/year. Because prices and plan names vary by location and change over time, always confirm the current figure on Microsoft's official Microsoft 365 pricing page before paying.
Step-by-step: paying with your Coinepay card
- On Microsoft's Microsoft 365 comparison page, choose a plan and, where offered, a monthly or annual term. Personal, Family and Premium pages also offer a one-month trial.
- Select Buy now and review the cart.
- Sign in with your Microsoft account, or create one if needed.
- When prompted for a payment method, add a card and enter your Coinepay virtual card number, expiry date and CVV exactly as shown in the app.
- Enter the billing address that matches your card records. If the Store requires a billing address in its country, use your real address in that country.
- Review the order total, including any tax, then select Place order. If your card's bank step appears, complete any 3-D Secure confirmation.
The purchase sets up a recurring subscription unless you cancel. If you started a trial, Microsoft says cancelling within 30 days of sign-up avoids a charge.
If you buy OneNote's parent subscription through Apple, Google or a retail billing partner instead of directly from Microsoft, you must manage payment changes, cancellation and refunds through that provider — not in your Microsoft account.
Managing the payment method later
For a Microsoft-billed subscription, sign in at account.microsoft.com/services with the purchasing account, then select Manage → Change how you pay to switch to or from your Coinepay card. The same subscription controls let you check the renewal date and cancel. To keep renewals working, make sure your Coinepay card has enough balance before the billing date, since Microsoft lists insufficient funds and overdue subscription payments among the reasons a charge can fail.
Cancelling and refunds
Cancel a Microsoft-billed plan at account.microsoft.com/services → Manage → Cancel, or turn off recurring billing so benefits continue until expiry without a future charge. For a direct Microsoft purchase, Microsoft says an initial-purchase refund is available in most cases if you cancel within 30 days or before the first recurring bill, whichever comes first; it also describes a one-time-per-account-and-product right to refund the most recent recurring charge if cancelled within 30 days of payment. Eligibility is shown during cancellation, and prorating rules differ by region.
Troubleshooting a declined card
If checkout fails, work through the common causes below. Microsoft's own troubleshooting points to incorrect card or billing-address details, an expired card, insufficient funds, a bank block or required verification, overdue payments and account restrictions.
| What you see or suspect | What to check |
|---|---|
| "Check the info you entered. It doesn't match the info for this card" | Re-enter the card number, expiry, CVV and especially the billing address so they match your Coinepay records exactly. A mismatched address or postcode is a frequent trigger. |
| "Payment failed because your financial institution declined your card. Replace your payment method below and retry" | Confirm the card is active in the Coinepay app and has enough balance for the plan plus tax. If the message persists, contact Coinepay support to check whether anything is blocking the charge. |
| Insufficient balance | Top up your Coinepay card so it covers the full amount including local tax, then retry. |
| 3-D Secure / bank verification prompt | Complete any confirmation step Coinepay requests during checkout. If no prompt arrives, open the Coinepay app to approve it, then place the order again. |
| Merchant region check | Microsoft products and payment methods vary by region, and a purchase may require a billing address in the Store's country. Use your real billing address; do not use false details or tools to disguise your location. |
| Card type not accepted | The exact card networks Microsoft accepts for consumer checkout are not published. Ask Coinepay support to confirm your card meets the requirement, or add PayPal as an alternative if it is offered in your region. |
Note that Microsoft states new sales in Russia remain suspended, and separately that OneNote for Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025 and is now read-only — Microsoft directs users to the supported OneNote for Windows app, which does not change how you pay.

FAQ
Do I have to pay anything to use OneNote?
No. OneNote's supported versions are free with a Microsoft account, which also includes 5 GB of OneDrive storage. You only pay if you want the OneNote desktop apps and extra features bundled into a Microsoft 365 subscription such as Personal, Family, Premium or Pro.
Which Microsoft 365 plan should I buy for OneNote?
Microsoft 365 Personal, Family and Premium include the OneNote desktop apps, and Pro also lists OneNote. Microsoft 365 Basic does not add the OneNote desktop benefits. Check current plan names and prices on Microsoft's official pricing page, since they vary by region.
Will my Coinepay virtual card be accepted at Microsoft checkout?
Microsoft lists credit cards, debit cards and PayPal for Store checkout but does not publish the exact card networks accepted for consumer purchases, and available methods vary by region. If you are unsure, contact Coinepay support to confirm your card meets the requirement before you buy.
My payment was declined — what should I check first?
Confirm your card number, expiry, CVV and billing address match your Coinepay records, ensure the card has enough balance for the plan plus tax, and complete any 3-D Secure prompt in the Coinepay app. If the decline continues, contact Coinepay support.
Can I cancel and get a refund after paying?
Cancel a Microsoft-billed plan at account.microsoft.com/services under Manage. Microsoft says an initial-purchase refund is available in most cases within 30 days or before the first recurring bill, whichever is sooner; eligibility and prorating are shown during cancellation and differ by region.
