Square Online is the e-commerce side of the Square platform, letting you build a store, add items and publish a website that accepts payments. If you want to move up from the free tier to a paid plan, you need a working payment method on file. This guide explains how to subscribe to Square Online, how to pay with a Coinepay virtual card, and what to do if the card is declined at checkout.

Coinepay issues virtual cards with an instant card number, expiry date and CVV, which you can use for online subscriptions and software. Before you start, remember that brand acceptance and card rules can vary by merchant, so treat this as a practical walkthrough rather than a promise that any specific card will be approved.

What you need before you start

  • A registered Coinepay account with identity verification (KYC) completed. If you have not signed up yet, create an account and finish verification first.
  • A Coinepay virtual card created in the iOS app, Android app or the 24/7 dashboard, with its number, expiry and CVV visible.
  • Enough available balance on the card to cover the plan charge plus any applicable foreign-issued card surcharge.
  • The billing address registered to your Coinepay card. Square checks the ZIP/postal code on card payments, so use your real billing details exactly as they appear in the Coinepay app.
  • A Square seller account. Only the account owner can sign up for Square Online.

Square Online plans and prices

Square Online offers Free, Plus and Premium tiers. In the US, Square is consolidating its products into bundled Square Free, Square Plus and Square Premium subscriptions, and describes the older paid Square Online Plus and Premium hosting plans as legacy for sellers migrating to the bundles. Outside the US, the Online pricing pages still list Free, Plus and Premium.

At the time of writing (October 2026), published paid prices included, for example, UK Plus £20/month and Premium £64/month, Canada Plus C$36 and Premium C$99, Australia Plus A$36 and Premium A$99, and Ireland, France and Spain Plus €25 and Premium €69. US Square Plus was listed at $49/month per active location and Square Premium at $149/month per active location. Paid plans outside the US are generally billed annually, so a monthly figure is not a month-to-month price. Prices vary by region and change over time, so always confirm the current amount on Square's official pricing page before you buy.

Step 1: Sign up and build your store

  1. Go to the Square website and sign up as the account owner, or sign in if you already have an account.
  2. Follow Square's setup guide to design your site, add items and set your fulfillment methods.
  3. Publish the website. A published Square site has Square card processing set up for its checkout flow automatically.

You can start on the Free tier and upgrade later once you know which features you need, such as removing Square branding or unlocking advanced shipping options.

Step 2: Choose a paid plan and add your card

Square manages subscription billing from the Dashboard. In the US Dashboard, go to Settings → Account & Settings → Pricing & subscriptions to view or manage your subscriptions, then select Update payment method. The documented subscription payment choices are a bank account or a credit card, so choose the card option and enter your Coinepay virtual card details:

  • Card number
  • Expiry date
  • CVV
  • Billing postal/ZIP code that matches your Coinepay card address

Confirm the plan and the billing cycle shown on screen before you submit. Paid plans outside the US are typically billed annually, which means a single larger charge rather than a small monthly one, so make sure your card balance covers the full amount.

Step 3: Confirm and keep your records

After the charge goes through, Square shows the active subscription under Pricing & subscriptions. You will also see the transaction in your Coinepay app history. Keep both for your own records. If you run several brands, you can create separate Coinepay virtual cards and set custom spending limits per card to keep each subscription's spending clearly separated.

Troubleshooting a declined card

Square documents a "card was not accepted" error and advises checking the card number, expiration, CVV and ZIP/postal code. Square also notes that it is not told the exact reason an issuer declines a card, so you often need to work through the common causes one at a time.

Insufficient balance

Make sure the card holds enough to cover the full plan price plus any surcharge. Square adds a fee for foreign-issued cards in several regions (for example a 1.5% addition on US online processing and higher non-UK/non-EEA rates elsewhere), and annual billing means the whole year is charged at once. Top up in the Coinepay app and try again.

Billing address or postal-code mismatch

Square checks the postal/ZIP code on card payments. If it does not match the address registered to your Coinepay card, the payment can fail. Open the Coinepay app, confirm the exact billing address and postal code, and enter them precisely at Square's checkout.

3-D Secure or issuer verification

Some transactions require additional issuer verification. If Square prompts for a confirmation step, approve it promptly in the Coinepay app or via any notification you receive. An unapproved verification request will show as a decline.

Wrong card details

Re-enter the card number, expiry and CVV carefully. A single mistyped digit produces a generic decline. Copy the details straight from the Coinepay app rather than from memory.

Merchant region checks

Square lists merchant card-processing availability only in the US, Canada, Australia, Japan, UK, Ireland, France and Spain, and a seller must process in the country where its account was activated. As a buyer on someone's published Square store you can still pay through Square eCommerce where supported. If a subscription or checkout page restricts certain card types or regions, confirm your card meets the requirement before you buy. Contact Coinepay support to check your card details if you are unsure.

Managing or cancelling your subscription

You can unsubscribe under Pricing & subscriptions in the Dashboard. Square's current general terms say subscription access continues through the current billing period and that fees already due or paid are not refunded or credited, so cancel before your next renewal if you do not want to be charged again. If you are a US seller migrating from a legacy paid Square Online hosting plan, Square's documentation describes a migration-specific prorated refund for unused hosting days, issued within 5–10 business days, while separately billed domains and Google Workspace are unaffected.

A note on customer checkout payments

If you are a shopper buying from someone's Square Online store rather than a seller paying for a subscription, the same card basics apply: enter your Coinepay card number, expiry, CVV and matching postal code. Square's accepted website methods include cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Afterpay, Cash App Pay, Square Gift Cards and Square Pay, depending on the seller's settings and your eligibility. The same decline checks above apply if your payment fails.

FAQ

Can I pay for a Square Online plan with a Coinepay virtual card?

Square's subscription billing accepts a bank account or credit card, and you enter the card number, expiry, CVV and billing postal code. Card brand acceptance can vary by country and transaction type, so if a page restricts card types, contact Coinepay support to confirm your card meets the requirement before you buy.

Where do I update my Square subscription payment method?

In the US Square Dashboard, go to Settings → Account & Settings → Pricing & subscriptions, then select Update payment method and enter your card details. From there you can also view or manage your active subscriptions.

Why was my card declined at Square checkout?

Square shows a "card was not accepted" error and does not reveal the issuer's exact reason. Check for insufficient balance, a postal-code or billing-address mismatch, mistyped card details, or an unapproved issuer verification step, and make sure your balance covers any foreign-issued card surcharge.

How much does Square Online cost?

Square Online has Free, Plus and Premium tiers, with paid prices that vary by country and are often billed annually. At the time of writing (October 2026), examples included UK Plus £20 and Premium £64 per month. Always check Square's official pricing page for the current price in your region.

What happens if I cancel my Square subscription?

You can unsubscribe under Pricing & subscriptions. Square's general terms say access continues through the current billing period and fees already paid are not refunded, so cancel before renewal if you do not want to be charged again.
