You can try a Coinepay virtual card for an ordinary purchase on bol.com, but not for bol’s Select or Kobo Plus subscription charges: those require bank-account direct debit. This guide separates the two payment flows, walks through a regular order, and explains what to check if your card payment is declined. Card acceptance depends on bol’s checkout and payment checks; do not place an order assuming a particular card will be accepted.
Know which bol payment you are making
A standard bol account does not have a subscription fee. You can use it to shop without joining Select or Kobo Plus. For ordinary purchases, bol lists card payment options alongside local methods such as iDEAL | Wero in the Netherlands and Bancontact in Belgium. Its payment information lists Mastercard, Visa and American Express credit cards and debit cards. The options actually offered can depend on the order and checkout.
Select and Kobo Plus are different. Bol says subscription charges are collected by bank-account direct debit, not by credit card or gift card. Do not choose Select or Kobo Plus expecting to enter your Coinepay virtual card number for the recurring charge. Bol’s terms describe a refundable bank-account verification payment of €0.01 for a Dutch account or €0.02 for a Belgian account. Follow the bank-payment instructions bol presents if you decide to subscribe.
If you need to know whether your particular Coinepay card meets a card option or requirement displayed by bol, contact Coinepay support before buying. Neither the presence of a card option nor possession of a virtual card establishes that a particular payment will be accepted.
What you need before a regular bol purchase
- A bol account and genuine order details. Create or sign in to your personal bol account, and provide your real name, email address, delivery information and billing details. Use a delivery address that is eligible for the item and the bol market you are shopping in.
- A Coinepay account ready for card use. Register with Coinepay and complete identity verification before using card services. You can manage your account through its self-service dashboard or mobile app.
- Your virtual card details. Coinepay issues a card number, expiry date and CVV. Retrieve them securely in your Coinepay account when you are ready to check out.
- Enough available funds for the final amount. Check the order total, including any delivery charges or other amounts shown at checkout, and check your available funds in Coinepay. If you need information about funding, limits or charges, consult the app or support rather than assuming an amount.
Review any region or delivery restrictions before paying. A virtual card does not change where bol can deliver, whether an item is available, or the payment checks applied to your order. Do not use an invented billing address or someone else’s identity to try to make a checkout work.
How to check out on bol.com with a virtual card
- Open the appropriate bol storefront. Shop on bol.com for the Netherlands or Belgium, as appropriate for your real delivery address. Sign in to your bol account, or create one using your real details if you are new to bol.
- Add your item and review the order. Check the seller, item, quantity, delivery address, delivery option and total. Available delivery choices depend on factors including the item, postcode and carrier capacity.
- Keep subscription additions separate. Bol may offer Select during an order. If you only want to buy the item with a card, review your basket and decline any subscription addition you do not intend to start. A Select subscription uses direct debit even when offered during an order.
- Choose a card option if bol offers one. At the payment step, select the relevant card-payment option shown for your order. Do not select iDEAL | Wero, Bancontact or pay later expecting them to accept a virtual card number; they are separate payment flows.
- Enter the card details accurately. Copy the card number, expiry date and CVV from Coinepay. Enter your real billing details as requested by bol and check them for typing mistakes. Follow any additional verification instructions presented during payment.
- Confirm only after reviewing the total. Submit the order once you are satisfied with the amount and details. Look for bol’s order confirmation and check your bol account before attempting the payment again if the result is unclear.
Bol’s Dutch payment information also refers to certain previously linked ABN AMRO or Rabobank payment cards, but says new payment cards can no longer be linked through that feature. That is not a setup step for your new Coinepay virtual card: use a card option offered directly at checkout instead.
If you want Select or Kobo Plus instead
Bol’s consumer subscriptions are Select and Kobo Plus. You can join Select from its offer page or add it during an order; you need a bol account, and bol says benefits start immediately. Select benefits are country-specific to the Netherlands or Belgium, so check which country’s offer applies to you. The Select terms describe an initial paid term of one year, followed by continuation for an indefinite period that can be cancelled with one month’s notice.
At the time of writing (October 2026), bol’s Netherlands and Belgium offer pages each showed Select at €14.99 per year. The Dutch offer page advertised a 90-day free trial, while the Belgian page advertised a 30-day free trial. Bol’s Dutch help information also mentions 30 days, so check your individual checkout offer for the trial you would actually receive and check bol’s official Select page for current pricing. A trial does not make the subscription payable by virtual card.
Kobo Plus offers Alleen Lezen (reading only), Alleen Luisteren (listening only) and Lezen & Luisteren (reading and listening). At the time of writing (October 2026), the first two were €11.99 per month each and Lezen & Luisteren was €14.99 per month in both markets. Bol advertised a 14-day trial for eligible new subscribers to Lezen & Luisteren; check its official Kobo Plus page and your checkout offer for current terms and prices.
Kobo Plus sign-up takes place through bol’s website checkout, with activation confirmed by email. A first-time trial changes to monthly paid billing unless you cancel before it ends. Bol requires a personal bol account, a payment account and a residential address in the Netherlands or Belgium; business accounts cannot subscribe. The recurring payment uses bank-account direct debit, so a Coinepay virtual card is not a substitute for the required payment account.
To review or cancel a subscription, sign in to mijn bol. Select’s remaining term appears under Mijn Select; Kobo Plus tiers can be changed through your bol account. For billing records, look under Facturen betalen. Bol says Kobo Plus can be cancelled in the account, with access lasting until the end of the paid monthly period and at most one month’s notice. Check the applicable terms before cancelling Select early: its terms also describe a 30-day withdrawal period, with a proportional charge for service already provided.
Troubleshoot a declined card at bol checkout
A failed payment does not, by itself, identify the cause. Avoid repeated attempts until you have checked the order status in bol and the card activity in Coinepay. Bol does not provide a verified, universal error message for each type of card decline, so use any message you see as a starting point rather than a diagnosis.
- Insufficient available funds: Compare the available amount in Coinepay with bol’s final checkout total, not just the item price. If the amount is insufficient, use the funding options available in your Coinepay account or choose another legitimate payment method.
- Billing-detail mismatch: Recheck your name, address and card details for mistakes. Use your real billing information; do not replace it with a made-up local address to try to pass a check.
- Additional card verification or 3-D Secure: If checkout asks you to authenticate a payment, follow the instructions actually displayed. If a verification step never appears, expires or fails, check your Coinepay account and ask support what applies to your card. Do not assume every card or transaction has the same authentication flow.
- Merchant region or eligibility checks: Confirm that you are using the appropriate Netherlands or Belgium storefront, that the order can be delivered to your real address, and that the offered card option applies. If bol indicates a card-type or country restriction, do not assume your Coinepay card meets it; contact Coinepay support to confirm the card’s eligibility before trying again.
- A payment-service problem: If your details and funds look correct, bol advises trying later when a bank or card-provider fault may be involved. First verify that no order was placed or payment taken. For an unresolved decline, give bol the order context and ask Coinepay support to review the card transaction.
If pay later is unavailable, treat that as a separate checkout issue rather than proof your card was declined. Bol lists possible reasons including the order amount, an incorrect email or unrecognized address, an unpaid bill, pickup-point delivery, the item type and previous ordering or payment behaviour. You can choose another payment option that bol offers for your order without trying to bypass its checks.

FAQ
Can I pay for bol Select with a Coinepay virtual card?
No. Bol collects Select subscription charges by bank-account direct debit, not by card. Check the payment instructions in your Select checkout.
Can I use the card for a regular bol.com order?
You can try it if bol offers a suitable card option at checkout. Acceptance of a particular Coinepay card or transaction is not assured.
Does a Kobo Plus free trial require a card?
Kobo Plus sign-up requires a payment account, and subscription charges use bank-account direct debit. An eligible trial converts to monthly paid billing unless cancelled before it ends.
Where can I cancel Select or Kobo Plus?
Sign in to mijn bol to manage or cancel subscriptions. Select’s remaining term appears under Mijn Select; check your account and the applicable terms for cancellation timing.
What should I do if bol declines my virtual card?
Check your available funds, card details, real billing information and any verification request. Confirm that no order was placed before retrying; contact Coinepay support if the decline remains unclear.
