You can start learning on Duolingo for free or choose a paid subscription. If you want to pay with a Coinepay virtual card, first check which plan and payment provider Duolingo shows you: a purchase on Duolingo’s website may be billed differently from one made through Apple or Google Play. This guide covers preparation, checkout, common declines, and where to manage your subscription afterward.
Choose a Duolingo plan and check the offer
Duolingo’s no-cost tier is called Free. Its established paid tiers are Super Duolingo and Duolingo Max. Super is available as an individual subscription; Duolingo also calls its shared option Super Family or the Duolingo Family Plan. The Family Plan covers up to six separate Super accounts, with one manager paying an annual fee. Max is a higher paid tier, but available features can differ by course and location.
Do not choose a tier based solely on an older feature comparison. For example, Duolingo made Explain My Answer free for eligible learners in 2026. Video Call access has also been changing for Super subscribers. Review the features displayed for your account before paying, particularly if one feature is the reason you want to upgrade.
Prices and offers vary by region, platform, and checkout. Check Duolingo’s official pricing page and the final checkout screen for the amount, billing period, currency, and any trial terms. Duolingo’s Super page has advertised a one-week trial, while an iOS listing has described a 14-day trial; neither should replace the offer shown at your own checkout. Check the charge that follows the trial before confirming.
What you need before paying
- A Duolingo account: Create one or sign in to the account that should receive the subscription. If you are buying the Family Plan, decide which account will be the paying manager.
- A Coinepay account and card: Register with Coinepay and complete identity verification (KYC) before using card services. Coinepay provides a virtual card number, expiry date, and CVV, which you can find through its self-service dashboard or mobile app.
- Sufficient available funds: Check the card’s available balance against the full amount displayed at checkout, including any applicable tax. If a trial is offered, plan for the post-trial charge as well.
- Your real billing details: Enter your actual name, billing address, and other requested details consistently with the information associated with your payment account. Do not use a made-up address to change a store region or bypass a payment check.
Check your Coinepay app for card settings and available funds before you begin. Card acceptance depends on the checkout and its payment provider; having a virtual card does not mean a particular Duolingo, Apple, or Google Play transaction will be approved. Some Coinepay services are also unavailable in certain jurisdictions.
How to subscribe and pay step by step
- Sign in to Duolingo. Open Duolingo’s website or app and sign in to the account you want to upgrade. If you are new, create your Duolingo account first.
- Open the upgrade offer. Select the subscription or upgrade option presented in your account. Compare the available Super Duolingo, Super Family, or Duolingo Max offers rather than assuming every plan appears in every location.
- Review the checkout details. Confirm the plan, billing period, total, currency, any trial length, post-trial charge, and the name of the provider that will bill you. Duolingo subscriptions recur for an equivalent period until canceled.
- Enter the card through the displayed payment flow. If the checkout offers card entry, use the number, expiry date, and CVV shown in your Coinepay dashboard or app. Enter your real billing details. If you are purchasing in the iOS or Android app, follow the Apple or Google Play payment flow shown there; the card may need to be added to that provider’s payment settings rather than entered into Duolingo directly. Available payment methods vary by provider and country.
- Complete any verification and confirm. Read the final confirmation screen before authorizing payment. If your payment provider or card issuer requests an authentication step, follow its on-screen instructions. Do not repeatedly retry a failed charge without first checking the reason.
- Check the result. Look for a purchase confirmation and verify that the paid tier appears on the correct Duolingo account. Keep the receipt: it identifies who billed you and helps you locate the subscription later.
For Super Family, the paying manager can invite and manage members from the Super dashboard. In the app, open it through the Super icon; on the website, reach it through your profile. Each member uses a separate Duolingo account, so check that invitations go to the intended people.
Why a Duolingo card payment may be declined
A decline does not, by itself, identify which company rejected the charge. Note the exact message and whether the purchase was on Duolingo’s website, Apple, or Google Play. Then work through these checks:
- Insufficient balance: Compare your available card funds with the amount at checkout. Account for any displayed tax and the full subscription charge, not just a promotional trial price. Google Play may show a “low card balance” message.
- Billing details mismatch: Recheck the card number, expiry date, CVV, name, and billing address entered with the payment provider. Google Play errors can include “Correct this card info or try another card”; it also identifies outdated or mismatched billing information as possible causes. Correct genuine errors rather than changing your address to another country.
- Authentication did not finish: If a 3-D Secure or other verification request appears, complete it through the legitimate payment flow and return to checkout. If no prompt arrives, it expires, or verification fails, contact Coinepay support with the time, amount, and message shown. Do not assume the transaction succeeded until the provider confirms it.
- Merchant or store-region checks: Your Duolingo offer and payment options can depend on your location and, for app purchases, your Apple Account or Google Play country. Use your real account and billing information. If a payment method is not offered, ask the billing provider about its requirements and contact Coinepay support to check your card details before trying to buy. Do not try to work around regional restrictions.
- Another provider or card issue: Google Play may display “expired card” or “Your transaction cannot be completed.” Check the expiry date and any account-verification request, then follow that provider’s guidance. If the provider cannot explain the decline, give Coinepay support the exact message without sharing your CVV in a support message.
If you received a purchase receipt but Super or Max is not active, first check that you signed in to the Duolingo account used at checkout. Then identify the billing provider on the receipt and contact its support or Duolingo support about the missing subscription. Avoid making a second purchase while the first charge is unresolved.
Manage renewal, cancellation, and refunds
Your billing provider determines where you cancel. For a subscription billed on Duolingo’s website, Duolingo documents this path: profile picture → Settings → Super Duolingo → Cancel subscription. For an in-app purchase, open the Super icon → gear → Manage subscription, then complete cancellation with the provider that billed you. For an Apple-billed purchase, Apple subscription settings control auto-renewal; Apple says renewal is charged within 24 hours before the current period ends. Check your provider’s deadline well before renewal.
Deleting the Duolingo app or your account does not itself cancel a recurring subscription. After cancellation, paid access generally continues through the current billing period. Duolingo’s terms say payments are nonrefundable and partially used periods receive no refund or credit unless local law requires otherwise. Apple and Google handle refund requests for purchases billed through their stores. For a direct website purchase, Duolingo directs users to request a review through its support option on the Super page.
If you need help locating your Coinepay card or understanding a card decline, use the Coinepay support page. For a missing Duolingo entitlement, cancellation, or refund, start with the billing provider and Duolingo’s support process shown for your purchase.
