Coinepay Global Remittance lets you send cross-border transfers from Germany to Romania and track every step from the app or the 24/7 self-service dashboard. This guide explains what you need before you start, how to choose a payout method, and how to review the exchange rate and fees before you confirm. Romania and Germany are both outside comprehensively sanctioned jurisdictions, so this route is supported, subject to identity verification, sanctions screening and local regulations.

Before you send: what you need

To send money from Germany to Romania you need a registered Coinepay account with identity verification (KYC) completed. If you have not signed up yet, create your account and finish verification first, then install the app from the App Store or Google Play.

You will also need accurate details for your recipient. Using the recipient's real legal name and correct payout details is essential — a mismatch is one of the most common reasons a transfer is rejected and returned.

  • Recipient's full legal name, spelled exactly as it appears on their bank account or ID.
  • Payout details for the method you choose (see below).
  • Purpose of the transfer and, if asked, the source of funds. Coinepay may request supporting documents as part of compliance checks.

Romania's currency and account formats

Romania's local currency is the Romanian leu (RON). Romania is a member of the European Union but has not adopted the euro, so you may send either RON or, because Romania is part of the SEPA area, euro. Always confirm with your recipient which currency their account accepts.

A Romanian IBAN has 24 characters: it begins with RO, followed by two check digits, a four-letter bank identifier and 16 further account characters. The IBAN already encodes the bank, so a separate branch code is not normally required. For a euro SEPA transfer, the IBAN is generally all you need. For a transfer routed over SWIFT, you may also be asked for the receiving bank's SWIFT/BIC — for example, Banca Transilvania publishes BTRLRO22XXX in its beneficiary-bank instructions. Ask your recipient's bank for the exact code it wants you to use.

Choosing a payout method

Coinepay supports common local payout methods. When you enter Romania as the destination, the app shows the options available for your specific transfer. Choose the one that suits your recipient.

Bank account deposit

Funds are paid into the recipient's Romanian bank account. You will need their full legal name and IBAN (the 24-character RO number above). For a non-SEPA/SWIFT payment you may also provide the bank's SWIFT/BIC. Crucially, confirm the account accepts the currency you are sending: some Romanian banks will not automatically credit an incoming EUR transfer to a RON (leu) account, so matching the currency to the account avoids delays.

Mobile wallet

Where a mobile-wallet payout is offered for this route, the recipient receives funds into a supported wallet linked to their phone number or account. You will typically need their registered name and the phone number or wallet ID. Availability of a specific Romanian wallet can vary, so check what the Coinepay app lists at the time of your transfer and confirm the details with your recipient.

Cash pickup

With cash pickup, the recipient collects the money at a payout location. They will usually need a government-issued photo ID matching the name on the transfer and any reference number Coinepay provides. Make sure the name you enter matches the recipient's ID exactly.

Step-by-step: sending the transfer

  1. Sign in to the Coinepay app or dashboard and open Global Remittance.
  2. Choose the destination and currency. Select Romania as the destination country and pick the send/receive currency (RON or EUR) that matches your recipient's payout method.
  3. Select the payout method — bank deposit, mobile wallet or cash pickup — from the options shown for this route.
  4. Enter the recipient's details exactly: full legal name plus the IBAN, SWIFT/BIC, wallet ID or pickup details required for the method you chose.
  5. Review the exchange rate and fees. Coinepay shows the rate and fees clearly before you confirm, along with the amount your recipient should receive. Check every figure and the spelling of the name.
  6. Confirm the transfer. Complete any identity or security step the app requests.
  7. Track the status. Each transfer has status tracking in the app, so you can follow it from submitted through to delivered and share updates with your recipient.

Receiving-side considerations in Romania

Romanian institutions apply their own reporting rules to incoming funds. Credit and financial institutions report external account transfers of €10,000 equivalent or more (including linked transactions) to the national financial-intelligence office, and providers handling money remittances report transfers of €2,000 equivalent or more. These are institution-reporting obligations rather than a ban on receiving the money.

Tax treatment depends on the facts. Romania's tax authority notes that money received from relatives can be a non-taxable gift or loan depending on the circumstances — receiving funds from abroad alone does not determine the tax outcome. Romanian residents with taxable foreign-source income may need to file the Declarația unică. If your recipient is unsure, they should check with a qualified local adviser or ANAF; Coinepay cannot give tax advice.

Troubleshooting

Wrong recipient details

An incorrect name or account number can cause the receiving bank to reject and return the payment. Double-check the IBAN, SWIFT/BIC and the exact legal name before confirming. If you spot a mistake after sending, contact Coinepay support as soon as possible.

Compliance review

Transfers are subject to identity verification and sanctions screening, and Coinepay may ask for documents such as the purpose or source of funds. Respond promptly and accurately — this helps clear the review. Never split a transfer, use a third party or take any other step to avoid checks or reporting.

Delays

Funding time, currency conversion, security or source-of-funds checks, weekends and public holidays can all affect delivery. SWIFT payments may also pass through intermediary banks, which adds processing steps. Use the in-app status tracker first; if a transfer is overdue, you can ask Coinepay support to request a trace.

Returned transfers

A receiving bank can reject a payment even when the details look correct, and a currency mismatch is a frequent cause — for example, an incoming EUR amount sent to a RON account that does not auto-convert. If a transfer is returned, check the currency and account details with your recipient, correct them and send again. Contact support if you need help understanding why a payment came back.

FAQ

What details do I need to send money to a bank account in Romania?

You need the recipient's full legal name and their 24-character Romanian IBAN (starting with RO). For a transfer routed over SWIFT you may also provide the receiving bank's SWIFT/BIC. Confirm the account accepts the currency you are sending.

Can I send euros, or do I have to send Romanian lei?

Romania's local currency is the leu (RON), but it is part of the SEPA area, so you may send euro or RON. Check with your recipient which currency their account accepts, because some Romanian banks do not automatically credit an incoming EUR transfer to a RON account.

Will Coinepay show the exchange rate and fees before I confirm?

Yes. Coinepay shows the exchange rate, fees and the amount your recipient should receive before you confirm the transfer, so you can review everything first. Figures vary by transfer, so always check them in the app.

Why might my transfer to Romania be delayed or returned?

Delays can come from funding time, currency conversion, security or source-of-funds checks, intermediary banks, weekends and holidays. Returns often result from a wrong name or account number, or a currency the receiving account does not accept. Use the status tracker and contact support if needed.

Does Coinepay report transfers to Romania?

All transfers are subject to identity verification, sanctions screening and local regulations, and Coinepay may ask for documents such as the purpose or source of funds. Romanian institutions also apply their own reporting thresholds on incoming transfers.
