Railway lets you deploy applications on a Trial, Free plan, or paid workspace plan. If you want to pay for Railway with a Coinepay virtual card, check the card requirements before upgrading: Railway’s pricing FAQ says plan subscriptions accept credit cards, and Railway staff have said prepaid cards are not supported. A virtual card is not automatically eligible. This guide walks through Railway’s billing settings, what to check at checkout, and what to do if a payment fails.
Before you start: check card eligibility and costs
Register for Coinepay and complete identity verification before using its card services. Once your virtual card is issued, its number, expiry date and CVV are available immediately. You can manage your card through the Coinepay app or its 24/7 self-service dashboard. Use your real identity and billing details on both services.
Check Railway’s restriction first. Railway’s pricing FAQ lists credit cards for plan subscriptions, while Railway staff have said prepaid cards are not supported. Guidance about debit cards is mixed, so do not assume a debit card will work either. This guide cannot establish whether a particular Coinepay card meets Railway’s requirements or whether Railway will accept it. Contact Coinepay support to confirm your card meets the merchant’s requirement before you buy. You can also ask Railway about its current payment policy.
At the time of writing (October 2026), Railway lists the following plans and published prices. Check Railway’s official pricing page and the amount shown at checkout before committing; usage can change your bill.
| Plan | Published pricing | Billing point to note |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | After the Trial, Free includes $1 of non-rollover monthly credit; this is a credit, not a monthly fee. |
| Hobby | $5 minimum per month | Includes $5 of monthly usage. |
| Pro | $20 minimum per month | Includes $20 of monthly usage. |
| Enterprise | Custom quote | Enterprise customers can arrange custom invoicing. |
At the time of writing (October 2026), new users can also receive a one-time Trial credit of $5 for up to 30 days. Railway lists separate Committed Spend Tiers accessible from Pro, with monthly commitments of $1,000, $2,000, $5,000 or $10,000. These are not the standard Pro minimum; check Railway’s official pricing page if you are considering one.
For Hobby and Pro, usage above the included amount costs extra, and unused monthly allowance does not roll over. Railway bills the subscription in advance and excess usage in arrears; it may also charge part of a bill earlier in the cycle. Check the available balance and any relevant card controls in Coinepay before adding the card, and leave room for usage beyond the plan minimum.
How to sign up and pay for Railway
- Create your Railway account. Go to Railway’s official site and select Login. Follow its sign-in and account setup prompts. New users can begin a no-card Trial; connecting GitHub can initiate verification for a less-restricted Trial.
- Choose the workspace you intend to pay for. Open Workspace Settings → Plans and review the available upgrades. Confirm that you are changing the intended workspace, particularly if you have more than one.
- Review the plan and expected usage. Choose Hobby or Pro if either suits your needs, then read Railway’s displayed terms and charges. A plan minimum is not necessarily the total bill if your projects use more than the included allowance.
- Check your Coinepay card details. In the Coinepay app or dashboard, locate the issued virtual card’s number, expiry date and CVV. Confirm that support has verified its suitability for Railway’s card requirements before proceeding. Check the card’s available balance and any settings that could affect the purchase.
- Enter payment and billing information. Follow Railway’s upgrade checkout and enter the card details requested by its payment form. Railway names Stripe as its payment processor. Provide your real billing address and any other requested information accurately; do not substitute an address or identity from another region.
- Confirm and verify the result. Complete any authentication step presented during checkout. Once Railway confirms the upgrade, inspect Workspace Settings → Plans for the active plan and Workspace Settings → Billing for the payment method and billing records. Do not assume a pending card hold alone means the subscription is active.
Railway places the payment method, billing address, tax ID and invoices under Workspace Settings → Billing. If you need to correct your address or review an invoice later, start there rather than creating another account. Railway may place a temporary $1 verification hold even when a subscription does not complete; check the Railway plan status and the card transaction separately.
Troubleshoot a declined Railway card payment
A decline message does not identify the cause with certainty. Start by checking the active plan in Railway, the transaction in Coinepay, and the details entered at checkout. Avoid repeatedly submitting the same payment without a change: Railway has described a processor fraud block following rapid purchase attempts.
Insufficient balance or a later usage charge
Make sure the card has enough available funds for the amount Railway is trying to charge, not just the advertised Hobby or Pro minimum. Included usage can be exceeded, and Railway can charge accrued usage separately or earlier in a billing cycle. Check your Railway billing activity against the transaction shown in Coinepay. If you need help interpreting an attempted card charge, contact Coinepay support; for the Railway invoice or usage calculation, contact Railway.
Card details or billing address mismatch
If checkout says “Card number is not correct,” re-enter the card number, expiry date and CVV from your active Coinepay card. Check for a copied digit, an expired card or an outdated saved payment method. Review the real billing address recorded for the card and the address entered under Workspace Settings → Billing. Correct genuine errors, but do not use an invented address to try to pass a payment or region check.
Authentication is required
The message “The card was declined because the transaction requires authentication” indicates that the attempted transaction needs an authentication step. Look for instructions presented by Railway’s checkout and in your card account, and complete any legitimate prompt offered. If no prompt appears or authentication fails, contact Coinepay support with the message and approximate attempt time. Do not assume every card supports every authentication flow.
Card-type, issuer or merchant-region checks
“Your card does not support this type of purchase” or “Your card was declined” may reflect a card restriction, an issuer decision or another checkout check; the wording alone is not a diagnosis. Remember Railway’s published credit-card guidance and its stated restriction on prepaid cards. Contact Coinepay support to confirm whether your card meets Railway’s requirements, and ask Railway to clarify a merchant-side rejection. Railway or its payment processor may also apply location or compliance checks. Use truthful account, billing and location information, and do not try to bypass a regional restriction. Coinepay does not serve sanctioned persons or residents of jurisdictions under comprehensive sanctions.
When requesting help, provide the exact error text, the approximate time, the workspace involved and whether Railway shows an active plan. Do not send your full card number or CVV in a support message. If you see a pending $1 verification hold but no upgrade, Railway says the bank removes such holds within days; contact support if you need to investigate its status.
Manage the plan after checkout
Use Workspace Settings → Plans to review plan options and Workspace Settings → Billing to maintain billing details and inspect invoices. If you decide to cancel, Railway places Cancel Plan under Billing → Active Plan. Railway says deployments stop to prevent further charges, while Hobby or Pro plan access lasts through the paid billing period; accrued usage can still be invoiced.
Do not count on a prorated refund for an unused paid subscription period. Railway’s terms say paid periods are not prorated, while eligible new customers may find an option to request a discretionary refund beside an invoice in Workspace Settings → Billing → Billing History. Resource-usage invoices generally are not refunded. Review your billing history before removing a payment method or closing a workspace so you can identify any remaining usage charges.
