Nintendo Switch Online is the subscription that enables online play, cloud saves, a library of classic games and other benefits on Switch and Switch 2. If you manage your spending with a Coinepay virtual card, you can use it at Nintendo's checkout the same way you would any other card. This guide walks through what you need, how to pick a plan, how checkout works, and how to read the specific error codes Nintendo shows when a card is declined.

Before you start

A few things make the purchase go smoothly:

  • A Nintendo Account set to your real country of residence. Nintendo ties your eShop and pricing to this region.
  • A verified Coinepay card. Register and complete identity verification (KYC) first, then open your card in the Coinepay dashboard or the app for iOS or Android. You will need the card number, expiry date and CVV.
  • Your real billing details. Nintendo checks the card information and billing ZIP/postal code, so enter the address that matches your Coinepay card and your own identity.
  • Enough balance on the card to cover the plan term you choose.

Use your own identity and billing details. Do not attempt to work around Nintendo's region checks; if your eShop region and card region do not match, Nintendo will decline the payment.

Choose your plan and term

Nintendo offers two tiers: Nintendo Switch Online (base) and Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, which includes the base benefits. Each tier has an Individual membership for one Nintendo Account and a Family membership for up to eight accounts in a family group. A Family membership purchaser must be at least 18.

Term lengths differ by plan. The base Individual plan comes in 1 month (30 days), 3 months (90 days) or 12 months (365 days). Base Family and both Expansion Pack plans are 12 months only.

Prices depend on your region and change over time. At the time of writing (October 2026), the United States base Individual plan is listed at $3.99 for 1 month, $7.99 for 3 months and $19.99 for 12 months, with base Family at $34.99/12 months and Expansion Pack at $49.99 (Individual) and $79.99 (Family). Other regions differ, and Japan revised its prices effective 1 July 2026. Always confirm the current figure on Nintendo's official membership page for your country before you buy.

Step-by-step: subscribe on your console

You can buy through the Nintendo eShop on a Switch 2 or Switch, through the console's Nintendo Switch Online area, or on Nintendo's website. On a US-region console the eShop flow is:

  1. Open the Nintendo eShop and select the account you want the membership on.
  2. Go to Nintendo Switch Online → Check/Change Membership.
  3. Choose a plan and term, then select Purchase.
  4. Follow the prompts for sign-in, location (if requested), and payment.
  5. When asked for a payment method, add your Coinepay card by entering the card number, expiry date, CVV and your billing address.
  6. Review the order and complete the final confirmation.

If you are moving from an Individual to a Family plan and are eligible, checkout may show a discount based on your unused Individual time.

Paying on the web

To manage the card used for renewals on the web, sign in at accounts.nintendo.com/portal, then open Funds and Payment Methods → Payment Method for Pre-Orders and Automatic Renewal → Change. Your active plan and its cancellation control appear under Nintendo Switch Online → Active Plan.

On a Switch 2, you can update the renewal card via eShop → account icon → Account Information → Settings → Payment Method for Automatic Renewal/Preorders → Change. On the original Switch, use eShop → account icon → Account Information → Automatic Renewal Payment Method → Change.

Which cards Nintendo accepts

For US and Canadian Nintendo digital-store purchases, Nintendo lists Visa and Mastercard — including eligible credit, debit and gift cards — and Discover. Nintendo's card-brand list for this checkout does not confirm American Express. Nintendo also notes that prepaid Visa/Mastercard/Discover cards must be registered before use.

Separately, the payment method must be issued in your country or region of residence to match your eShop region. If you are unsure whether your Coinepay card satisfies Nintendo's brand and region requirements, contact Coinepay support to confirm before you buy. US, Canada and Mexico can also use PayPal as an add-funds option; availability elsewhere varies by market.

Troubleshooting a declined card

Nintendo shows specific codes and messages. Match yours below:

ErrorWhat it usually meansWhat to try
2813-2471The card must be issued in your country/region of residence; it does not match your eShop region.Check that your Nintendo Account region and your card's region are the same. Contact Coinepay support to confirm your card's region.
"This credit card cannot be used as its issuing country is not among those compatible with this Nintendo eShop"Card/eShop-country mismatch, or a typo in the card details.Re-enter the card number, expiry, CVV and the correct billing ZIP/postal code.
2813-2470 / 2813-2472The issuer refused the transaction, often because entered details differ.Verify the card number, billing address and security code; confirm the card has enough balance in the Coinepay app.
2813-2480Nintendo has restricted credit-card use on that account.Contact Nintendo support about the account restriction.
2813-0009Likely a temporary eShop service issue, not a bank decline.Wait and try again later.

Work through the common causes in order:

  • Insufficient balance: open the Coinepay app and check the card has enough to cover the full term before retrying.
  • Billing address or ZIP mismatch: enter the exact billing details tied to your Coinepay card.
  • 3-D Secure / authentication: if a verification step appears, complete it through the method shown in your Coinepay app so the charge can be approved.
  • Region check: your card region must match your eShop region. Do not try to disguise your location.
  • Pending hold after a failed attempt: an unsuccessful purchase can leave a temporary bank-style hold. Nintendo advises checking with the issuer before repeated attempts rather than retrying rapidly.

Renewals, cancellation and refunds

Most plans renew automatically using the saved payment method; any renewal shortfall is charged to the selected card or PayPal account. To stop auto-renewal, turn it off at least 48 hours before expiry. Under Nintendo's stated US policy, access continues through the paid term with no refund or credit for unused time. Nintendo's UK support separately states a statutory 14-day right to cancel for memberships bought through the eShop, so check the rules for your own country.

Note that automatic renewal is listed for the Americas service countries except Quebec, Canada, and that trial terms differ by region (for example, a US base-tier trial is seven days, while Nintendo's UK page says its trial ends unless automatic renewal is activated). Review the trial screen in your region before confirming.

Keep your Coinepay card funded ahead of renewal dates so the subscription does not lapse, and manage both your card and your balance from the 24/7 Coinepay dashboard or app. If you have questions about your card at Nintendo's checkout, reach out through Coinepay support or Telegram.

FAQ

Can I use a Coinepay virtual card for Nintendo Switch Online?

You can enter your Coinepay card's number, expiry and CVV at Nintendo's eShop or web checkout like any other card. Nintendo requires the card to match your eShop region and lists Visa, Mastercard and Discover for US/Canada purchases. If you are unsure your card meets the brand or region requirement, contact Coinepay support before buying.

Why is my card declined with error 2813-2471?

That code means the card must be issued in your country or region of residence and does not match your Nintendo eShop region. Confirm your Nintendo Account region and your card's region are the same. Do not try to bypass the check; contact Coinepay support if you need to confirm your card's region.

How much does Nintendo Switch Online cost?

Prices vary by region and term. At the time of writing (October 2026), the US base Individual plan is listed at $3.99 (1 month), $7.99 (3 months) and $19.99 (12 months), with higher prices for Family and Expansion Pack. Always check Nintendo's official membership page for your country, as prices change.

How do I change the card used for automatic renewal?

On Switch 2: eShop → account icon → Account Information → Settings → Payment Method for Automatic Renewal/Preorders → Change. On Switch: eShop → account icon → Account Information → Automatic Renewal Payment Method → Change. On the web, use accounts.nintendo.com/portal → Funds and Payment Methods → Payment Method for Pre-Orders and Automatic Renewal → Change.

My card was charged but the purchase failed. What should I do?

An unsuccessful purchase can leave a temporary hold. Nintendo advises checking with the card issuer before repeating the attempt. Review the transaction in your Coinepay app, confirm your balance and billing details, and wait before retrying rather than submitting the payment repeatedly.
