DigitalOcean is a cloud platform where you launch Droplets, deploy apps on App Platform, run Managed Databases, Kubernetes, Spaces object storage and more. Billing is usage-based and settled monthly, so you need a working payment method on file before you create any resources. This guide walks through setting up your DigitalOcean account, adding a card, understanding how checkout and billing work, and troubleshooting a declined card. It also flags an important card-type restriction you must check before you rely on any particular card.

Important: DigitalOcean's card-type restriction

Read this first. DigitalOcean's payment documentation states that it accepts credit and debit cards on the Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, UnionPay, Diners Club and JCB networks, but that it does not accept virtual, electron or prepaid cards. It also prohibits cards issued in, or bearing billing addresses in, OFAC-sanctioned countries.

Because of this, you should not assume any specific card will be accepted. If you plan to pay DigitalOcean with a Coinepay virtual card, contact Coinepay support first to confirm your card meets DigitalOcean's requirement before you try to add it or create resources. DigitalOcean also lists alternative payment methods — PayPal, Google Pay, Apple Pay, Alipay and Link, plus ACH direct debit from US bank accounts for qualifying customers — which may suit you depending on your situation.

What you'll need before you start

  • A verified Coinepay account. Register at Coinepay and complete identity verification (KYC) before using card services. You can manage everything from the 24/7 dashboard or the Coinepay app on iOS and Google Play.
  • Your virtual card details — card number, expiry date and CVV, all issued instantly in Coinepay.
  • Your real billing address, matching the address on your Coinepay account. Use your genuine identity and billing details.
  • Confirmation from Coinepay support that your card type is suitable for DigitalOcean, given the restriction above.

Note that some Coinepay services, including those related to virtual assets, are not available in every jurisdiction and are not offered to residents of mainland China.

Step 1: Create your DigitalOcean account

Go to the official DigitalOcean website and sign up with your email, or with a Google or GitHub account. Registration creates the account, but a valid payment method is required before you can create any resources. A first team receives an automatic $5 signup credit that expires after 90 days; credits and prepayments are applied before your primary payment method is charged.

Step 2: Add your card as a payment method

In the DigitalOcean Control Panel, open the Billing page, then the Payment methods section. For an organization, use the profile icon → View Organizations → select organization → Billing; member teams use the organization's payment methods.

  1. Choose to add a credit or debit card.
  2. Enter your card number, expiry and CVV exactly as shown in Coinepay.
  3. Enter the billing address that matches your Coinepay account.
  4. Save the card. A newly added card may receive a temporary preauthorization hold that can remain visible for up to seven days; this is standard verification, not a charge. (Connecting PayPal instead involves a separate $5 authorization.)

You can set billing-address and tax details on the Settings tab of the Billing page.

Step 3: "Checkout" on DigitalOcean is creating a resource

DigitalOcean does not have a traditional shopping cart. The practical checkout step is creating a resource, which then accrues charges with usage. For example, to launch a server choose Create → Droplet, then select the region, image, configuration and other options and select Create. Your balance is ordinarily due on the first day of the next month, when credits or prepayments are applied before your card is charged.

Be aware of billing tiers (Resource/trust Tiers 1–5). These are billing-limit tiers, not subscriptions: they set prepayment amounts and auto-charge thresholds that control how often your card is billed as your usage grows.

DigitalOcean plans and prices (check the official page)

DigitalOcean quotes and invoices exclusively in USD — including for customers in the US, UK, EU, India, Canada and Australia — and does not offer local-currency invoices; applicable taxes are added on top (for example, DigitalOcean lists UK VAT at 20%, India GST at 18% and Australia GST at 10%). At the time of writing (October 2026), published starting points include:

  • App Platform: Free Tier ($0/month, up to three static-site apps) and Paid Tier (from $5/month per container). Basic and Professional are legacy tiers for apps created before May 7, 2024.
  • Droplets (bundled CPU plans): Basic from $4, CPU-Optimized from $42, General Purpose from $63, Memory-Optimized from $84, Storage-Optimized from $131 per month. v5 and GPU Droplets are priced by configuration.
  • Spaces: Standard Storage from $5/month (250 GiB included).
  • Managed Databases: PostgreSQL and MySQL Standard Basic-node from $15.15/month.
  • Kubernetes: free standard control plane; optional high-availability control plane $40/month; worker nodes at Droplet rates.
  • Support Plans: Starter $0, Developer $24, Standard $99, Premium $999 per month.

Prices and plans vary and change by region and product; always confirm current figures on DigitalOcean's official pricing pages before you buy.

Troubleshooting: why your card was declined

DigitalOcean documents the common reasons a card is declined rather than exact on-screen error strings. Work through these:

1. Prepaid or virtual card not accepted

DigitalOcean does not accept virtual, electron or prepaid cards. If this is the cause, the fix is not a retry — confirm with Coinepay support whether your card meets DigitalOcean's accepted card types, or use one of DigitalOcean's other listed methods.

2. Insufficient available funds

Make sure your Coinepay card has enough balance to cover both the payment and any temporary preauthorization hold. Top up in the Coinepay app and try again.

3. Billing address mismatch

The billing address you enter on DigitalOcean must match the one registered to your card. Check it on the Billing Settings tab and correct any typos in postcode, country or street.

4. 3-D Secure authentication

Your issuer may require 3-D Secure (an extra confirmation step). Complete the prompt in the Coinepay app if one appears, and make sure your contact details in Coinepay are current so you receive it.

5. Bank fraud block or region check

A new cloud charge can trigger an automated fraud block, or the card may be refused if it is issued in or has a billing address in a sanctioned country. Note that DigitalOcean screens for prohibited regions, and Coinepay also screens all customers against sanctions lists and does not serve sanctioned persons or jurisdictions under comprehensive sanctions.

Managing, cancelling and refunds

To stop account billing, use profile icon → My Account → Deactivate; resolve team resources and ownership first, as a deleted team's payment method is charged its final balance. Remember that merely stopping a Droplet does not end its compute charges — you must destroy it to stop Droplet billing. DigitalOcean states it does not offer refunds, though it invites customers with extenuating circumstances to contact its support; fees already paid are generally non-refundable.

Getting help

For billing or resource questions on DigitalOcean's side, use DigitalOcean's own support. For anything about your Coinepay card — balance, holds, 3-D Secure, or whether your card type fits DigitalOcean's requirement — reach Coinepay support or our Telegram. You can review your card and transactions any time from the Coinepay dashboard or mobile app.

FAQ

Does DigitalOcean accept virtual cards?

DigitalOcean's payment documentation states it does not accept virtual, electron or prepaid cards; it accepts credit and debit cards on Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, UnionPay, Diners Club and JCB. Contact Coinepay support to confirm whether your card meets this requirement before you try to use it, or consider one of DigitalOcean's other listed methods.

Why was my card declined when adding it to DigitalOcean?

DigitalOcean lists these common reasons: a prepaid card, insufficient available funds, a bank fraud block, or issuer-required 3-D Secure authentication. Also check that your billing address matches your card and that the card is not issued in a sanctioned region.

What currency does DigitalOcean charge in?

DigitalOcean quotes and invoices exclusively in USD, including for customers in the US, UK, EU, India, Canada and Australia. It does not offer local-currency invoices, and applicable taxes are added on top.

Is there a charge when I add my card?

A newly added card may receive a temporary preauthorization hold visible for up to seven days; this is verification rather than a final charge. Connecting PayPal instead involves a separate $5 authorization.

Can I get a refund from DigitalOcean?

DigitalOcean says it does not offer refunds and that fees already paid are generally non-refundable, though it invites customers with extenuating circumstances to contact its support. Stopping a Droplet does not end its charges — you must destroy it.
