Cloudways is a managed cloud hosting platform where you run WordPress, web apps and e-commerce stores on infrastructure from providers like DigitalOcean, Vultr, Linode, AWS and Google Cloud. Because Cloudways bills in US dollars and settles usage monthly, a Coinepay virtual card can be a tidy way to keep hosting charges separate from the rest of your spending. This guide walks through what you need, how to add the card during checkout, and how to work through the most common decline causes.
What you need before you start
Set up a few things so your first Cloudways charge goes through cleanly:
- A verified Coinepay account. Register and complete identity verification (KYC) first, then create a virtual card from the dashboard or app. You can create your Coinepay account and install the apps for iOS or Android. Card and fund services are provided by licensed partner financial institutions, and virtual-asset services are not available to residents of mainland China or in every jurisdiction.
- Your full card details. Coinepay issues the card number, expiry date and CVV instantly, which you will type into the Cloudways billing form.
- A funded card balance. Keep enough balance for the usage you expect, plus headroom for the small verification hold described below.
- Your real billing address. Use the same name, address and tax location that match your Coinepay account. Cloudways keeps a billing address and tax location in its settings, and a mismatch is a frequent cause of declines.
Cloudways lists Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover credit/debit cards as accepted methods, with PayPal available after a trial upgrade. If you are unsure whether your Coinepay card meets a specific requirement, contact Coinepay support to confirm before you buy.
Understand Cloudways plans and how billing works
Cloudways' products include Flexible, Autonomous and Velocity (for Node.js applications). Rather than a one-off checkout, Cloudways invoices the prior month's usage in the first week of the next month, then draws down in a set order: promotional credits first, then prepaid funds, then your primary saved method, with any backup method tried if the primary fails.
At the time of writing (October 2026), the pricing page shows Flexible starting at US$11/month with hourly usage billing; Autonomous lists a 3-day Free Trial ($0) plus Growth (US$99/mo), Scale (US$199/mo), Plus (US$399/mo) and an Enterprise custom tier; and Velocity lists Starter through Business tiers from US$20 to US$400/month. Prices and plan names change, so confirm the current figures on the official Cloudways pricing page. Cloudways states that transactions are exclusively in USD, and applicable taxes depend on your billing location.
Step 1: Create your Cloudways account
- Go to the official Cloudways website and start the sign-up form.
- Enter your details, agree to the terms, and verify your email.
- The three-day hosting trial does not require a card, so you can explore the platform before adding payment.
Use your real identity and real billing details throughout. Cloudways (and its underlying DigitalOcean terms) restricts access from comprehensively sanctioned regions and prohibited parties, so sign up only from a jurisdiction where the service is available.
Step 2: Add your Coinepay card and upgrade from trial
- Log in and click the profile icon.
- Open Billing → Settings → Payment Method → Add Payment Method.
- Enter your Coinepay card number, expiry and CVV, and confirm the billing address and tax location match your card.
- Submit. Adding a card triggers a temporary US$1 authorization that is reversed; verifying the card is what upgrades a trial account to full, rather than charging a plan price upfront.
If you later choose to add PayPal instead, note that its authorization credits US$5 to your account toward a future invoice. Multiple saved methods are supported, so you can keep a backup on file.
Starting a Cloudways Autonomous plan
If you are subscribing to Autonomous, choose a plan, review its allowances and overage rates, then enter an application name, select a region and confirm the plan. Paid Autonomous plans are billed by active application-hour, and autoscaling or overage charges can apply, so check the allowances before you confirm.
Step 3: Review and manage billing
All billing controls live under profile icon → Billing, which contains Overview, Billing History, Credits & Discounts and Settings. Settings holds your billing address, tax location, payment methods and alerts. Use Billing History to download invoices and reconcile them against your Coinepay transaction records.
Tip: Because Cloudways bills usage after the fact, keep your Coinepay card funded ahead of the first week of each month when the prior month's invoice is charged.
Troubleshooting: card declined or "Invalid Request"
Cloudways documents an "Invalid Request" error when adding a card or funds. Documented decline causes include an incorrect number, expiry or CVV; insufficient funds; transaction limits; and issuer blocks on online or international payments, or a required OTP verification. Work through these in order:
- Insufficient balance. Top up your Coinepay card so it covers the upcoming invoice plus the temporary US$1 authorization. Check your current balance in the Coinepay app.
- Card details typed wrong. Re-enter the number, expiry and CVV exactly as shown in Coinepay. A single wrong digit produces a decline.
- Billing address mismatch. Make sure the address and tax location in Cloudways Billing Settings match the details registered to your Coinepay card.
- 3-D Secure / OTP. Cloudways may route the authorization through an additional verification step. Keep your Coinepay app and phone nearby to approve any prompt, and complete it promptly before it times out.
- Online or international payments blocked. If a control is limiting the transaction, review your card settings in the Coinepay app, or contact Coinepay support.
- Transaction limits. A charge above your card's limit will be refused; check your limits in the Coinepay app.
- Merchant region checks. Remember that Cloudways charges in USD and screens for eligibility. Confirm you are accessing the service from a supported jurisdiction.
Cloudways discusses other payment problems but does not publish a verified list of exact decline messages, so treat any on-screen wording as a prompt to check the items above. If the card still fails after these checks, add a backup method or reach out to Coinepay support to confirm your card is suitable for this merchant.
Cancellations and refunds
You can cancel at any time. Cloudways instructs you to back up data, delete servers and deactivate add-ons first, then go to profile icon → Account → Cancel My Account. Cancellation is irreversible and a final usage invoice may follow. For prepaid funds, a valid request made within three months of adding funds can qualify for a refund of unused prepaid Cloudways funds, excluding amounts already spent on services. Any refund is returned to your payment method per Cloudways' terms.
Keep hosting spend organized with Coinepay
Because Coinepay lets you create virtual cards and set spending limits, you can dedicate one card to Cloudways and watch hosting costs separately from advertising, AI subscriptions and other software. Everything is managed from the 24/7 self-service dashboard and the Coinepay mobile app, so you can top up, check balances and review transactions whenever an invoice is due. FAQ
Does Cloudways accept a Coinepay virtual card?
Cloudways lists Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover credit/debit cards, plus PayPal after a trial upgrade. Enter your Coinepay card details in Billing → Settings → Payment Method. If you are unsure whether your card meets a requirement, contact Coinepay support to confirm before you buy.
Do I need a card to start the Cloudways trial?
No. The three-day hosting trial does not require a card. You add your Coinepay card later under profile icon → Billing → Settings → Payment Method → Add Payment Method, and verifying the card upgrades your trial to a full account.
Will I be charged immediately when I add my card?
Adding a card triggers a temporary US$1 authorization that is reversed, used only to verify the card. Cloudways bills actual usage in the first week of the following month, drawing on credits, prepaid funds, then your saved card.
Why does Cloudways show an "Invalid Request" error when I add my card?
Cloudways documents this error for causes like an incorrect number, expiry or CVV, insufficient funds, transaction limits, or issuer blocks on online or international payments and required OTP. Re-check your details and balance in the Coinepay app, then try again.
In what currency does Cloudways charge, and can I get a refund?
Cloudways states transactions are exclusively in USD, with taxes based on your billing location. A valid request within three months of adding funds can qualify for a refund of unused prepaid funds, excluding amounts already spent on services.
