Coinepay Global Remittance supports transfers from the United Kingdom to Kenya. You can choose a bank deposit, mobile wallet or cash pickup when that option is available for your transfer. This guide explains what to collect from your recipient, how to review the transfer before confirming it and what to check if the payout is delayed.

What you need before sending

Register for Coinepay and complete identity verification before using the service. You can manage transfers through the Coinepay mobile app or 24/7 self-service dashboard. Before you start, ask the recipient for their full legal name exactly as it appears on their bank account, mobile-wallet registration or identification document. You will also need the details for your chosen payout method.

Kenya’s local currency is the Kenyan shilling (KES). When setting up the transfer, check the sending and receiving currencies shown in Coinepay rather than assuming every payout route uses the same currency. Confirm with the recipient that their account or wallet can receive the selected payout.

  • Bank deposit: Get the recipient’s bank name and account number. Depending on the route, you may also be asked for the branch, a local bank-and-branch code, the recipient’s city or mobile number, and the reason for sending.
  • Mobile wallet: Get the recipient’s registered name, wallet provider and Kenyan mobile number. Ask them to check that the wallet is active and registered in their name.
  • Cash pickup: Get the recipient’s name as shown on the identification they will use to collect the money. Check the pickup instructions presented for the transfer before you confirm it.

Use your own real identity and accurate details for both parties. Transfers are subject to identity verification, sanctions screening and local regulations. Coinepay may request documents or information about the purpose of the transfer or the source of funds.

Choose a payout method in Kenya

Bank account deposit

A Kenyan bank deposit generally requires the account holder’s name, bank name and account number. Ask the recipient to copy the account number from their bank records and verify the spelling of their name. If the transfer form asks for a branch or local bank code, request it from the recipient or their bank instead of guessing. Kenya’s bank-and-branch code format has five digits: two identifying the bank and three identifying the branch. Whether you need to enter that code separately depends on the payout route shown in Coinepay.

Do not substitute an IBAN for a Kenyan account number. Kenya has no national IBAN format. If the transfer instructions call for a direct international bank wire, obtain the receiving bank’s SWIFT/BIC and any branch or intermediary-bank details it specifies. An IBAN belonging to a UK or European intermediary bank is not the Kenyan recipient’s account number. Follow the fields and instructions shown for your selected transfer rather than adding wire details to a local bank-deposit form that does not request them.

Mobile wallet

Mobile-wallet deposit lets an eligible recipient receive funds in a supported wallet instead of a bank account. M-PESA and Airtel Money are two major wallets used in Kenya. Choose the wallet option displayed for your transfer, then enter the recipient’s registered name, provider and mobile number in the requested format. International-entry forms may ask for a Kenyan number beginning with country code 254; follow the format shown on the screen and check it with the recipient.

The recipient should confirm that the wallet belongs to them and can receive the payout. A name or number mismatch can prevent completion. Ask the recipient to check their wallet’s own receiving conditions if they are unsure whether it can accept the transfer.

Cash pickup

If cash pickup is offered for your transfer, select the available pickup option and make sure the recipient can reach the designated location. They will generally need valid identification matching the name on the transfer, plus the pickup details or reference supplied for that transfer. Requirements can vary by payout partner; give the recipient the instructions shown in Coinepay, not a reference format used by a different provider. Collection may depend on the agent’s opening hours, identification checks and service availability.

How to send money from the UK to Kenya

  1. Sign in to your verified account. Open the Coinepay app or dashboard and start a Global Remittance transfer. If you have not registered, create an account and complete the required verification first.
  2. Choose the destination and currencies. Select Kenya as the destination and review the sending and receiving currency options presented. Enter the amount using the fields shown for your transfer.
  3. Select the payout method. Choose bank deposit, mobile wallet or cash pickup from the options available for this transaction. Enter the recipient’s full legal name and the corresponding account, wallet or pickup information.
  4. Review everything before confirming. Check the recipient name, destination, payout method and every digit of the payment details. Coinepay shows the exchange rate and fees before you confirm. Review those figures and the amount the recipient is shown to receive.
  5. Confirm and track the transfer. Submit the transfer only when the details are correct. Use its status tracking in the app or dashboard to follow progress, and watch for any request for additional information.

Tell the recipient which payout method you chose and what they may need to receive or collect the money. Share transfer information only with the intended recipient, especially when cash pickup is involved.

Recipient-side checks to make in Kenya

Before you send, ask the recipient to confirm that their bank account or wallet is active and that the registered name matches the transfer. For a bank payout, they should check whether the account can receive the selected currency. For a wallet payout, they should confirm the provider and registered phone number. For cash pickup, they should confirm that their identification matches the transfer name and review the collection instructions.

Receiving institutions and payout partners may ask for identification or an explanation of the payment. Larger or unusual transactions can prompt further questions about their nature and purpose. Respond accurately if Coinepay or the receiving provider requests supporting information; do not send through another person or break up a transfer to avoid a check.

Troubleshooting a transfer to Kenya

  • Wrong recipient details: If you spot a mistake, check the transfer status and contact Coinepay support promptly. Do not assume a submitted transfer can be edited or stopped. Incorrect names, account numbers, bank codes or wallet numbers may delay a payout or cause it to be rejected.
  • Compliance review: If Coinepay requests identification, the purpose of the transfer or source-of-funds documents, provide accurate information through the instructed channel. Transfers must meet identity-verification, sanctions-screening and local regulatory requirements.
  • Transfer appears delayed: Check status tracking for updates or requests. Bank processing, intermediary steps where applicable, weekends, public holidays and cash-pickup agent availability can affect progress. Contact support with the transfer reference if the status is unclear.
  • Transfer is returned: Ask support for the reason shown for the return. A receiving bank may reject an incorrect account or an account that is dormant, restricted or unable to accept the selected currency. Confirm corrected details with the recipient and their bank before starting another transfer.

Coinepay sends to every country and region except jurisdictions under comprehensive sanctions and does not serve sanctioned persons. Every transfer remains subject to applicable screening and local rules. If you are unsure which Kenya payout option or receiving detail applies, check the choices in the app before confirming or contact Coinepay support.

FAQ

Can I send money from the United Kingdom to an M-PESA wallet in Kenya?

Coinepay supports mobile-wallet payouts. Check whether M-PESA is offered for your particular transfer, then enter the recipient’s registered name and Kenyan mobile number in the format shown.

Do I need an IBAN for a Kenyan bank deposit?

No national IBAN format exists for Kenya. Use the recipient’s Kenyan bank account details requested for the payout; a direct international wire may also require the bank’s SWIFT/BIC.

What does a recipient need for cash pickup in Kenya?

They generally need identification matching the transfer name and the pickup details supplied for that transfer. Check the specific collection instructions before confirming.

What should I do if I entered the wrong account or wallet number?

Check the transfer status and contact Coinepay support promptly with the transfer reference. Do not assume a submitted transfer can be changed or cancelled.
