WeChat Pay — called Weixin Pay in the mainland-China user agreement — lets you pay merchants in mainland China by scanning a collection QR code, showing a payment code, or being redirected from a merchant app. If you don't have a Chinese bank account, you can link an international card to your Weixin wallet and use it for eligible purchases. This guide shows how to use a Coinepay virtual card for that, step by step, and how to troubleshoot a declined payment.
Before you start: what you need
Make sure you have the following ready so the linking flow doesn't stall:
- A WeChat account, registered with a Chinese or foreign mobile number, with the app updated to a recent version.
- A Coinepay virtual card. After you register with Coinepay and complete identity verification (KYC), you can issue a card and see its number, expiry date and CVV instantly in the iOS or Android app.
- Your real identity details and billing information. Card linking asks for the requested identity and card data, so use your genuine name and address exactly as held by Coinepay.
- Access to the phone that receives verification codes, because linking requires phone verification and successful issuer verification.
A note on scope: a linked international card is intended for eligible consumer purchases within mainland China. On its own it does not enable Balance top-ups or person-to-person Balance transfers. Card eligibility, which merchant scenarios are allowed, and any limits are shown in the app and are also subject to your issuer's rules.
If you are based in Hong Kong, WeChat Pay HK is a separate Hong Kong-dollar wallet with its own linked bank-account and credit-card channels and its own agreement. It is not the same product or fee schedule as a mainland wallet funded by an international card, so the steps below are written for the mainland Weixin Pay flow.
Step 1: Open the Wallet and add your card
- In WeChat, go to Me → Services → Wallet.
- Open Cards and choose to add or link a new card.
- When prompted for the card brand, pick the one that matches your Coinepay card. A government visitor guide lists linkable card-logo categories as Visa, Mastercard, UnionPay, American Express, JCB, Diners Club and Discover, while warning that the brands actually accepted vary by payment product.
- Enter the card number, expiry date, CVV and the requested identity and billing details from your Coinepay app. Enter them precisely — a mismatch is a common cause of a failed link.
- Complete phone verification and wait for issuer verification to finish.
Because card brands and scenarios vary, it is worth confirming your card is suitable before you rely on it for a purchase. Contact Coinepay support to confirm your card meets WeChat Pay's requirements before you buy.
Step 2: Pay at checkout
Once a card is linked, you pay the same way most WeChat users do:
- Scan to pay: tap the scan icon and scan the merchant's collection QR code, enter the amount if asked, and confirm with your linked card.
- Show your code: open Me → Services → Wallet and present your payment QR code for the merchant to scan.
- In-app checkout: a merchant app can redirect you into WeChat to approve the payment and then return you to the merchant app.
During this step the app displays the applicable charge or any waiver, so you can review it before confirming.
What international-card payments can cost
Prices and fees vary by market, so always rely on what the payment page shows at the moment you pay. For context, here is what the official notices stated at the time of writing (October 2026) for mainland international-card use — check the official WeChat Pay and Tenpay pages for the current terms:
- A Tenpay notice dated January 15, 2026 states no international-card fee for a transaction of RMB 200 or less, and 3% of the amount above RMB 200.
- A Tencent announcement dated May 27, 2026 describes a 90-consecutive-day international-card fee waiver for first-time card-linking users, starting from their first transaction and covering spending up to RMB 1,000 per day. Whether you personally qualify must be checked at checkout.
These figures are specific to mainland international-card use and should not be treated as worldwide prices. The merchant's own goods or service price is separate.
Troubleshooting: why a card payment is declined
Officially documented failure reasons include issuer rejection during card linking, issuer-imposed payment restrictions, transaction limits, and failed security verification. Work through the causes below.
Insufficient balance or funds
Confirm your Coinepay card has enough available balance to cover the full charge, including any international-card fee shown on the payment page. Top up or check the available amount in the Coinepay app, then retry.
Billing address or identity mismatch
Travelers have reported a real-name-document error when paying certain merchants. Re-enter your name, card details and billing information so they match exactly what Coinepay holds. Do not use a fake address or someone else's identity — mismatched or false details are a frequent reason a link or payment fails.
3-D Secure or security verification
If a security check or one-time code appears, complete it on the phone linked to your card. A dropped or mistyped code shows up as "failed security verification." Make sure you can receive the verification message before you try again.
Issuer restrictions and transaction limits
A "your bank declined this transaction" message points to an issuer-side block or a limit. Review any per-transaction or daily limits shown in your WeChat wallet and in the Coinepay app, and confirm your card isn't restricted for this type of purchase. If a link keeps failing, the issuer or the payment-service support can investigate.
Merchant region and scenario checks
An international card is for eligible purchases within mainland China. Some users report a card working at a merchant QR code but failing at a personal QR code — paying another individual is a different scenario and may not be supported. If one merchant won't accept the card, the cause of any single case is often specific to that merchant or scenario rather than the card itself.
Refunds and cancellation
If you haven't paid yet, an unpaid merchant order can simply be closed. Once a payment succeeds, the remedy is a merchant-initiated refund. A mainland merchant can issue a full or partial refund within 365 days of a successful payment, normally back to the original card or Balance, with a documented maximum of 50 partial refunds per order. That is a processing window, not a promise that every purchase qualifies. Tenpay says it returns the international-card processing fee proportionally when an international-card transaction is refunded, and merchant documentation says card refunds generally arrive in 1–3 business days, though you should check the final status.
You can review your activity under Me → Services → Wallet → Transactions. If you want to close your Weixin Pay account, that option is under Me → Services → Wallet → Payment Settings; it requires a risk review and no unfinished transactions or unsettled obligations.
Keep both apps handy
Manage your card, balance and transaction history from the Coinepay 24/7 self-service dashboard or mobile app, and handle payments and refunds inside WeChat. If a charge, link or refund doesn't behave as expected, reach Coinepay support or the Coinepay Telegram for card-side help, and ask the merchant about the underlying goods-or-services issue. You can also start from the Coinepay home page if you're new.

FAQ
Can I link a Coinepay virtual card to WeChat Pay?
You can attempt to link an international card to Weixin Pay under Me → Services → Wallet → Cards, entering the card number, expiry, CVV and your real identity and billing details. Acceptance depends on the card brand, your issuer's rules and WeChat's scenario checks. Contact Coinepay support to confirm your card is suitable before you buy.
What can I pay for with an international card linked to WeChat Pay?
A linked international card is intended for eligible consumer purchases within mainland China, such as scanning a merchant's QR code. On its own it does not enable Balance top-ups or person-to-person Balance transfers, and allowed scenarios and limits are shown in the app.
Why was my WeChat Pay card payment declined?
Documented causes include issuer rejection, issuer-imposed restrictions, transaction limits and failed security verification. Check that your Coinepay card has enough balance, that your details match exactly, that you completed any security code, and that you are paying a supported merchant scenario rather than a personal code.
Are there fees for using an international card on WeChat Pay?
At the time of writing (October 2026), a Tenpay notice stated no fee for transactions of RMB 200 or less and 3% above RMB 200, and a separate 90-day waiver for first-time card-linking users up to RMB 1,000 per day. The payment page shows the applicable charge or waiver; check the official WeChat Pay and Tenpay pages for current terms.
How do I get a refund for a WeChat Pay purchase?
After a successful payment, the merchant initiates the refund. A mainland merchant can refund fully or partially within 365 days, normally back to the original card, and Tenpay returns the international-card fee proportionally on a refunded international-card transaction. Card refunds generally arrive in 1–3 business days; check the final status in Transactions.
