You do not need to pay to join Marriott Bonvoy. If you want to use a Coinepay virtual card, the payment-related task is booking a Marriott hotel stay, not buying a Bonvoy subscription. This guide covers what to prepare, how to make a direct reservation, and what to check if the card is declined. A hotel’s acceptance of a particular card depends on the property, rate and payment checks.
Know what you are paying for
Marriott Bonvoy enrolment and continuing membership cost US$0 at the time of writing (October 2026). Marriott does not publish a separate subscription price for its membership tiers: Member, Silver Elite, Gold Elite, Platinum Elite, Titanium Elite and Ambassador Elite. Elite qualification requirements are not prices you can pay at checkout. A hotel room, by contrast, has a rate that depends on the property, dates, occupancy and rate selected. Check the current price and terms in Marriott’s booking flow before committing.
A reservation may work differently from an ordinary online purchase. Marriott says a credit or debit card generally holds a reservation without an immediate charge, unless the selected rate requires a deposit or prepayment. The hotel asks for a card again at check-in. Read the specific rate terms so you know when payment is due and what you will need to present at the property. Do not assume that entering a card online means the full stay has been paid.
What you need before booking
- A Coinepay account ready for card use. Register with Coinepay and complete identity verification (KYC). Coinepay issues virtual cards with a card number, expiry date and CVV; you can manage your account through its self-service dashboard or mobile app.
- Your real personal and billing details. Use your legal name and accurate contact and billing information. Your reservation and any identity details requested by the hotel should be your own.
- A stay and a rate you have reviewed. Have your destination, dates and guest count ready. Compare the room’s total price, deposit or prepayment terms, and cancellation deadline before booking.
- Enough available funds for the applicable payment. If the rate requires a deposit or prepayment, check that the card can cover it. Also plan for any amounts the hotel says are due at check-in or during the stay.
- A check-in plan. Because Marriott asks for a card at the hotel, contact the property before booking if you are unsure whether it can use your chosen payment method at check-in. Online reservation acceptance does not settle the property’s check-in requirements.
Some Coinepay services are not available in every jurisdiction. If you need to confirm a card-service requirement or an account detail before booking, contact Coinepay support. Marriott Bonvoy membership also requires legal eligibility in your jurisdiction; do not use inaccurate details to try to bypass a restriction.
Step 1: Join Marriott Bonvoy if you want membership benefits
Joining Bonvoy is optional for understanding the card payment, but it gives you a membership account associated with your stays. On Marriott’s website or in the Bonvoy app, choose the option to join, enter the requested account details, create a password and accept the terms. The app displays a digital membership card after sign-up. Membership itself has no checkout charge, so you do not need the Coinepay card merely to enrol.
When signed in, make sure your name and contact information are accurate before proceeding to a reservation. If you already belong to Bonvoy, sign in rather than creating another account. Do not confuse a hotel rate with a membership-tier purchase or with a separate co-branded credit-card product.
Step 2: Select and review a Marriott stay
In the Bonvoy app, enter your destination and dates, then select a property, room and rate. The website offers a direct-booking route as well. Before continuing, read the price, payment method and rate terms displayed for your selection. In particular, look for whether the rate calls for a deposit or prepayment, when any remaining amount is due, and what happens if you cancel or change the reservation.
Do not rely on a price from a different hotel, date or country as an estimate for your checkout. The total and applicable terms come from the itinerary you select. If a change to your plans is likely, compare the cancellation terms before choosing a rate; changing a reservation can also result in a different price.
Step 3: Enter the Coinepay card and confirm
- Open your Coinepay dashboard or app and retrieve the virtual card number, expiry date and CVV for the card you intend to use. Keep those details private.
- At Marriott’s booking checkout, enter the card details in the payment fields. Supply your real billing details as requested, and check each entry for typing errors.
- Review the reservation one last time: property, dates, room, rate, price, payment terms and cancellation policy. In the app, confirm by tapping Book Now when you are ready.
- Check that Marriott provides a reservation confirmation. Save its details and the rate terms. If a charge was expected, also check your Coinepay activity rather than assuming the booking succeeded solely because a payment attempt appeared.
If the rate only uses a card to hold the reservation, you may not see an immediate room charge. If it requires prepayment, do not treat the booking as complete until Marriott confirms it. Bring the payment method and identification the property requires for check-in, and ask the property in advance if you need clarification about using a virtual card there.
If Marriott declines the card
A decline does not, by itself, identify its cause. Read any message shown at checkout, check whether Marriott created a reservation, and avoid making repeated bookings until you know what happened. Then work through these checks:
- Insufficient available funds: Compare the amount due now with the funds available to your card. A deposit or prepaid rate can require payment during booking even when another rate at the same property does not. Review the displayed total and add funds if appropriate before trying again.
- Billing details mismatch: Re-enter the card number, expiry date and CVV carefully. Check that the billing name and address you provide are accurate. Marriott’s separate gift-card checkout warns that address-verification checks can decline cards from banks outside the US; that warning is not a universal rule for hotel reservations. If an address check appears to be the issue, ask Marriott about the checkout requirement and ask Coinepay support for help with the details you should use.
- 3-D Secure or another verification step: If checkout requests authentication, complete the prompt through the method presented to you. If it fails, expires or never appears, check the status of the payment attempt and contact Coinepay support. Do not assume a failed verification left a confirmed booking.
- Merchant or property region checks: A booking site or property may apply payment and eligibility checks based on the transaction or stay. Use your real location and billing information. If the checkout rejects the payment or the hotel has a specific check-in card requirement, ask Marriott or the property what it requires. Contact Coinepay support to confirm whether your card meets a stated requirement before trying to buy.
Marriott confirms credit and debit cards for holding reservations, but payment acceptance beyond that varies by property and rate. A card list shown at Marriott’s separate gift-card checkout is not a promise that every hotel will accept the same methods. If you cannot resolve a decline, ask the property whether another permitted payment method is available rather than relying on an unconfirmed reservation.
Manage a booking or find a hotel bill
To cancel a reservation in your Marriott account, go to My Trips → View/Modify → Cancel Reservation. Check the confirmation first: the deadline, any penalty and any refund depend on the booked rate and hotel policy. For a points booking, cancelling on time returns the points; a late cancellation may forfeit points or result in fees.
For eligible stays in the US and Canada, Marriott says you can find a hotel bill through account name → Activity → View Bill, or in the app through Trips → Past → Hotel Bill. For other bills, Marriott directs guests to its contact form. A hotel bill is a record of a stay, not a recurring Bonvoy membership invoice.
If you want to close your Bonvoy account rather than cancel one stay, Marriott requires written notice to Member Support. Unused points, awards and status are generally forfeited immediately. There is no Bonvoy membership fee to refund.
