You enter your card details for a subscription, software purchase or online order, but checkout returns “Do not honor.” The message is frustrating because it rarely explains what went wrong. It means the card payment was declined, not that the merchant has identified a particular problem. Here is how to investigate the refusal, decide whether to try again and, if appropriate, make an online payment with a Coinepay virtual card.

What does “Do not honor” mean?

Visa names authorization response code 05 “Do not honor.” It is a generic decline: the code alone does not tell you why the authorization was refused. Depending on the merchant’s payment processor, you might instead see a field such as Stripe’s do_not_honor decline code or a Refused payment status. These are not interchangeable fields, even when they describe the same unsuccessful checkout.

A merchant sends an authorization request through its payment provider. The response is then passed back to the merchant and, sometimes, displayed to you. A processor successfully receiving and handling that request does not mean the payment was approved. For example, a technical response indicating that a request was processed can accompany a refused card payment.

Possible issues to investigate include card details entered incorrectly, insufficient available funds or credit, and security concerns at the issuer. Do not treat code 05 as proof of any one of these. Authentication requirements can also affect some online payments, but a generic “Do not honor” message does not establish that authentication was the cause.

What should you prepare before checking out?

  • Your real account and billing information: use your own identity and the billing details that apply to your card. Do not substitute an invented address to get past a payment check.
  • The correct card details: have the card number, expiry date and CVV available in a secure place. Avoid sending these details in an email or support message.
  • The purchase details: note the merchant, item or subscription, amount shown at checkout, and whether you have already received an order confirmation.
  • A way to complete verification: be ready for any legitimate identity, account or payment-authentication step presented by the card service or merchant. Do not try to bypass regional eligibility rules.

To use Coinepay card services, register and complete identity verification first. Card issuance and fund services are provided by licensed partner financial institutions. Service availability can vary by jurisdiction, so check the Coinepay app or contact Coinepay support if you are unsure what is available to you.

How to pay online with a Coinepay virtual card

  1. Set up your account. Register with Coinepay and complete the required identity verification using your real information. Provide any additional documentation requested through the appropriate account or support channel.
  2. Get your card details. In the Coinepay app or 24/7 self-service dashboard, access your virtual card’s number, expiry date and CVV. Check the app for the card’s current status and any information you need before purchasing.
  3. Review the merchant’s checkout. Confirm that the product or subscription is available to you under the merchant’s terms. Check the final order details before entering payment information.
  4. Enter the details carefully. At the merchant’s card checkout, enter the Coinepay virtual card number, expiry date and CVV. Supply your real billing information in the fields requested. If the checkout presents an authentication step, follow its instructions.
  5. Check the outcome before trying again. Look for a merchant confirmation and check your Coinepay transaction information. If checkout says “Do not honor,” do not assume the purchase succeeded or immediately submit the same payment repeatedly. Use the steps below to find out what happened.

Coinepay virtual cards can be used for categories such as AI subscriptions, software, advertising and online shopping, but each merchant makes its own payment decision. If a merchant states a restriction on eligible cards or issuing countries, check that requirement and ask Coinepay support whether your card meets it before you buy.

How to troubleshoot a “Do not honor” decline

1. Check for a completed purchase first

Review the merchant’s order or subscription page and any confirmation message. Check your Coinepay transaction information as well. If the merchant shows an active order but checkout displayed an error, contact the merchant before paying again. Give them the order reference, if one exists, rather than your full card details.

2. Correct information you can verify

Compare the entered card number, expiry and CVV with the details shown in Coinepay. Check for typing mistakes and confirm that the billing information you entered is accurate. If the merchant specifically identifies a CVC or address-check failure, correct the relevant field before considering another attempt. A generic code 05, by itself, does not establish that either check failed.

3. Look for a more specific instruction

Read the full error shown at checkout and any message from the merchant. A request to complete authentication needs a different response from a generic refusal: follow the legitimate authentication flow rather than resubmitting unchanged details. Some EU/EEA payments can be subject to strong customer authentication, but you should not infer that this applies to your particular decline solely from “Do not honor.”

Merchants may have information that shoppers cannot see, including a processor decline code, a network response or advice code, and CVC or Address Verification Service results. If checkout provides no useful detail, ask the merchant whether its payment provider returned a more specific instruction. You can ask without requesting sensitive information about its payment systems.

4. Ask Coinepay support to review the card transaction

If your details are correct and you cannot identify a checkout issue, contact Coinepay support through a trusted channel. Provide the merchant name, approximate transaction time, amount, the error displayed and any transaction reference available in your account. Do not send your CVV or full card number in a message. The merchant may not receive a detailed issuer-side explanation; for privacy and security reasons, cardholders are often better placed to ask about their own card decline.

5. Decide whether another attempt makes sense

“Do not honor” does not mean “keep retrying.” Payment providers can return separate advice about whether to try again. For example, Stripe’s advice code do_not_try_again tells a merchant not to reuse the card for the same transaction, while try_again_later permits a later attempt. For applicable card-not-present payments, a Mastercard Merchant Advice Code such as 03 means “Do not try again.” A network response code and its accompanying advice must be considered separately.

If you corrected a clear entry error or completed a requested authentication step, follow the merchant’s checkout instructions. If the refusal persists or the merchant says not to retry, stop and ask for help or choose another legitimate payment method the merchant offers. Do not switch identities, alter billing details or try to evade a merchant’s regional or security checks.

What if you manage the merchant checkout?

If you are troubleshooting payments for your own business, inspect the transaction in your payment provider’s records before asking the shopper to act. Compare the processor’s decline field, any available network response and advice codes, and CVC or address-verification results. The meaning of a network code can depend on the card brand. A generic 05 response should not be converted into a claim that the shopper lacks funds, entered the wrong address or failed a fraud check.

Give shoppers a useful next step without disclosing sensitive payment data: ask them to verify the details they entered, complete an authentication flow if one was requested, or contact their card provider. Follow your payment provider’s applicable retry advice rather than automatically resubmitting declined authorizations. This reduces confusion for both the shopper and your support team.

The practical takeaway

A “Do not honor” error identifies a refused card authorization, not a confirmed root cause. Start by checking whether the order went through, then verify your card and billing details and look for any specific authentication or retry instruction. With a Coinepay virtual card, use the details shown in your account and contact support with the transaction context if the reason remains unclear. Make another payment attempt only when you have a reason to do so and the merchant’s instructions permit it.

FAQ

Does “Do not honor” mean I entered the wrong CVV?

No. It is a generic decline. Check the CVV, but do not assume it caused the refusal unless the merchant provides a more specific result.

Can I retry a payment after a do not honor error?

Check whether the order succeeded and look for specific retry advice first. Correct a verified error or follow an authentication prompt, but do not repeatedly resubmit an unchanged payment.

What should I tell Coinepay support about a declined payment?

Share the merchant name, approximate transaction time, amount, displayed error and any available transaction reference. Do not send your CVV or full card number.

Will a Coinepay virtual card work if another card received this error?

A different card is not a guaranteed fix. Review the merchant’s payment requirements, use your real billing details and check with Coinepay support if you need to confirm a card requirement.
