Linode, now sold as Akamai Cloud, charges for cloud compute based on the services you actually provision rather than a single fixed-price checkout. That makes it a usage-billed service where you add a payment method once and let invoices accrue. This guide walks through creating an account, adding a Coinepay virtual card, and what to check if a card is declined. Coinepay issues virtual cards with an instant card number, expiry date and CVV that you can use for software and online services like cloud hosting.
Coinepay cards and funds are provided through licensed partner financial institutions, and you must register and complete identity verification (KYC) before using card services. Services related to virtual assets are not available to residents of mainland China, and some services are not available in every jurisdiction.
What you need before you start
- A verified Coinepay account with a virtual card. If you do not have one yet, register with Coinepay, finish KYC, and create a card in the dashboard or the iOS or Android app.
- Your card number, expiry date and CVV, which appear in the Coinepay app once the card is issued.
- Your real billing name and address. Linode requires a directly added card to match the account's billing contact and address, so use the identity details on your Coinepay account.
- Enough balance on the card. Linode prices are quoted and charged in USD, and verification may place a $1 authorization hold.
- A valid email, and a phone number for verification.
Linode's accepted card networks include Visa, Mastercard, Discover, American Express and UnionPay, including supported debit cards. Coinepay does not publish which network its card uses, so if your account or a specific plan requires a particular network, contact Coinepay support to confirm your card meets this requirement before you rely on it.
Step 1: Create your Linode (Akamai Cloud) account
- Go to the official sign-up page at login.linode.com/signup. Register with email, username and password, or use Google or GitHub.
- Confirm your email address and verify your phone number.
- Choose whether the account is Personal or Business.
- Enter your billing address, add a payment method, and accept the Master Services Agreement.
Most accounts activate immediately, but some are placed under review. Supplying a payment method on sign-up does not by itself create a paid-service charge; charges begin only when you provision a service.
Step 2: Add your Coinepay virtual card
You can add the card during sign-up or later in Cloud Manager → Administration → Billing, which is where invoices, payment methods and the Make a Payment option live.
- Open the Billing section and choose to add a payment method.
- Enter the card number, expiry date and CVV from your Coinepay app.
- Enter the billing address exactly as it appears on your Coinepay account and your Linode billing contact. A directly added card must match the account's billing contact and address.
- Save. Linode may place a temporary $1 authorization hold to verify the card.
Note that adding a card does not automatically pay an overdue balance; if you already owe a balance, use Make a Payment after the card is on file.
Step 3: Deploy a service so billing can begin
There is no fixed VM checkout page. To create a server:
- In Cloud Manager choose Create → Linode.
- Select a region first, then a plan.
- Pick a plan family: Shared CPU (for example Nanode 1 GB or Linode 2–192 GB), Dedicated CPU, High Memory (Linode 24, 48, 90, 150, 300 GB), NVIDIA GPU, or Accelerated.
- Configure the instance and deploy. Charges then accrue for the provisioned service.
At the time of writing (October 2026), global USD list prices included Nanode 1 GB at $5/month ($0.0075/hour), Shared Linode 2 GB at $12/month, and High Memory Linode 24 GB at $60/month; some regions such as Jakarta and São Paulo use separate local pricing. Published prices exclude applicable taxes, and prices change, so always confirm the selected region's price in Cloud Manager before you deploy and check Akamai's official pricing pages.
Invoices normally issue on the first of the month for the prior month's usage, with possible threshold-triggered mid-month invoices. Since July 1, 2026, some services such as G8 Dedicated, GPU and additional IPv4 addresses are billed for actual hours without monthly caps, so budget for hourly accrual on those.
Step 4: Pay an invoice manually
If you prefer to pay down a balance yourself, go to Administration → Billing and choose Make a Payment, then select your Coinepay card. This is useful for keeping your balance low on a prepaid-style card so an automatic monthly charge does not fail for insufficient funds.
Troubleshooting card declines
Akamai notes that banks often do not pass on decline details and advises contacting your card issuer. One user reported the message "Your credit card was declined - contact your bank for details," and another hit a processing error when adding a payment method on sign-up. Work through the common causes below.
Insufficient balance
Make sure your Coinepay card holds enough to cover the charge in USD plus the possible $1 authorization hold. Top up in the Coinepay app and try again. Remember uncapped hourly services keep accruing, so keep a buffer.
Billing address mismatch
A directly added card must match the account's billing contact and address. Re-enter the address to match your Coinepay billing details character for character, including postal code and country.
3-D Secure / authentication
If your card uses 3-D Secure, approve the confirmation prompt from the Coinepay app or your registered device while the Linode page is open. If you miss it, retry the payment.
Merchant or region checks
Plan and capacity availability vary by data center, and a region being available does not prove your card or account passes every check. If a card keeps failing, confirm the card details are current (an expired card has historically been a decline reason) and that your Coinepay card is active in the app. Then contact your issuer — here, Coinepay support — to see whether the authorization reached them.
Use your real identity and billing details. Do not attempt to bypass a merchant's regional or payment checks; doing so can get your account or card blocked.
Stopping charges and refunds
Powering off a VM does not stop billing — you must delete the service. To close the account entirely, go to Administration → Account Settings → Close Account, which deletes services and immediately charges the remaining balance less credits. Cancellation within the first seven days is likely eligible for a full refund of service charges paid by a valid payment method (not promotional credits). Other positive-balance refund requests are considered only for payments in the last 180 days, return to the original method if approved, and may incur a $5 fee. Review the current terms on Akamai's official pages or with Linode support before you rely on any refund.

FAQ
Does Linode accept a Coinepay virtual card?
Linode (Akamai Cloud) accepts credit and debit cards on Visa, Mastercard, Discover, American Express and UnionPay networks. Coinepay does not publish its card network, so if a specific requirement applies, contact Coinepay support to confirm your card meets it before you buy. The billing address you enter must match your Coinepay account details.
Why was my card declined when adding it to Linode?
Common causes are insufficient balance, a billing address that doesn't match, a missed 3-D Secure prompt, or an expired card. Akamai advises contacting your card issuer, since banks often don't pass on the reason. Check your balance and details in the Coinepay app, then contact Coinepay support.
How much does Linode cost and in what currency?
Prices are quoted and charged in USD and exclude applicable taxes. At the time of writing (October 2026), Nanode 1 GB was listed at $5/month globally, with separate local pricing in regions like Jakarta and São Paulo. Prices change, so confirm the selected region's price in Cloud Manager and on Akamai's official pricing pages.
Will I be charged just for adding my card?
No. Supplying a payment method during sign-up does not by itself create a paid-service charge, though Linode may place a temporary $1 authorization hold to verify the card. Charges begin only once you provision a service, and invoices usually issue on the first of each month.
How do I stop Linode charges on my card?
Delete the service — powering off a VM does not stop billing. To close the account entirely, use Administration → Account Settings → Close Account, which deletes services and charges the remaining balance less credits. Cancellation within the first seven days may be eligible for a full refund of service charges.
