The Anthropic API (Claude API) is billed by usage, not as a flat monthly subscription. Most organizations buy prepaid credits inside the Claude Console and spend them against each model's per-token price. This guide shows how to set up billing and pay with a Coinepay virtual card, then works through the most common reasons a card gets declined at checkout.

Coinepay issues virtual cards with an instant card number, expiry date and CVV that you can use for AI subscriptions, software and online shopping. Before you start, remember that you must use your real identity and real billing details, and that Anthropic only serves its listed supported regions.

How Anthropic API billing works

Unlike Claude Pro or Max, API access is usage-priced. There are two billing paths:

  • Prepaid credits — the self-serve path most people use. You buy credits in the Console and they are available immediately, drawn down as you call the API.
  • Monthly invoicing — arranged with Anthropic's sales team and billed in arrears. Anthropic sends a Stripe invoice at the end of each calendar month, and ACH bank transfer is accepted on this path.

Your organization also sits in a usage tier — Evaluation, Start, Build, Scale or Custom — which sets your limits rather than a price. New organizations may begin in Evaluation. Published monthly spend caps at the time of writing include Start $500, Build $1,000 and Scale $200,000, with Custom arranged through an account team. Separately, service tiers are Standard and Priority, and Batch processing is a discounted way to run requests, not an account subscription.

What you'll pay

The first-party API publishes USD prices per million input/output tokens. At the time of writing (October 2026) the standard global-routing prices include Claude Opus 5.5 at $4/$20, Claude Sonnet 5.5 at $2/$10, and Claude Fable 5.1 at $10/$50. Claude Haiku 5.5 is $0.10/$0.50 for prompts up to 100,000 tokens and $0.50/$2.50 for longer prompts. Batch processing discounts token prices by 50%, while choosing US-only inference adds 10% for Claude 4.6 and later models.

Local-currency checkout amounts for individual markets are not separately published, so always confirm current figures on Anthropic's official pricing page before you buy. Because you pay by buying credits, you control exactly how much you load.

What you need before you start

  • A Claude Console account, with API access subject to Anthropic's Commercial Terms.
  • Admin or Billing permissions in the Console — only these roles can buy credits or change the payment method.
  • A completed Coinepay account. Register and finish identity verification (KYC) first; card services aren't available until KYC is done. Card issuance is provided by licensed partner financial institutions.
  • A Coinepay virtual card with enough balance to cover the credit amount you plan to buy.

You can create and view the card's number, expiry and CVV in the Coinepay dashboard or the mobile app (iOS and Google Play).

Step by step: buy Anthropic API credits

  1. Sign in to the Claude Console and confirm you're an Admin or Billing user for your organization.
  2. Open Settings > Billing. This page shows your credit balance and usage, auto-reload controls, and the payment method on file.
  3. Choose Buy credits, enter the amount you want to load, and continue to the payment step.
  4. In Coinepay, open the virtual card you'll use and copy its number, expiry date and CVV.
  5. Enter the card details in the Console checkout. For the billing address, use the address registered to your Coinepay card exactly as it appears in the app — the billing address is tied to the payment method.
  6. If prompted, complete 3-D Secure verification through the Coinepay app or your confirmation method.
  7. Confirm the purchase. Credits are available immediately, and you'll see the updated balance under Settings > Billing.

To update or replace the card later, use the pencil icon beside the payment method in Settings > Billing.

Set up or stop auto-reload

Auto-reload tops up your credits automatically when the balance runs low. You'll find it under Settings > Billing. To stop automatic prepaid purchases, switch off auto-reload at Auto-reload > Edit. Prepaid API billing isn't a subscription with a renewal date to cancel — spending simply stops when your credits run out and auto-reload is off.

Troubleshooting: why your card was declined

At checkout you may see messages such as "Your card was declined." or "Your payment couldn't be processed. Check your card details and try again." Anthropic notes that issuing banks don't tell it the exact reason, but it lists these possible factors. Work through them in order.

Insufficient balance

A prepaid virtual card needs enough available balance to cover the full credit amount. Check the balance in your Coinepay app and top it up if needed, then retry.

Billing address mismatch

The billing address you type must match the one registered to your Coinepay card. Open the card details in the app, copy the address exactly, and re-enter it. Even a small difference can trigger a decline.

3-D Secure not completed

If verification is required and not finished, the payment fails. Make sure your Coinepay app is set up to receive and approve the confirmation prompt, then try the purchase again.

Card details entered incorrectly

Re-check the number, expiry and CVV against the app. Virtual card numbers are easy to mistype.

Card origin or region checks

Anthropic lists an unsupported card origin or billing location and an unsupported payment method as possible decline reasons. An official, API-specific confirmation of which card networks (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, JCB) or whether prepaid/virtual card types are accepted is not published, and "credit and debit cards accepted" doesn't guarantee that any given card works. Note too that PayPal and Venmo are not accepted. If a decline persists after the checks above, contact Coinepay support to confirm your card meets these requirements before you try again. You can also reach the team on Telegram.

Temporary technical issues

Transient problems on either side can cause a failure. Wait a short while and retry, ideally with a fresh checkout session.

Credits, refunds and account availability

Purchased API credits expire one year after purchase, can't be extended, and are non-refundable, so load amounts you expect to use. Console Admins can request organization deletion at Settings > Organization > Delete organization, but any outstanding balance must be paid first and some organizations must contact Anthropic support instead.

Access is limited to Anthropic's listed supported regions. Its policy also excludes use while you're physically in an unsupported region, and certain entities incorporated, headquartered or majority-owned there, even if the individual user is elsewhere. Use your real location and details — don't try to work around regional checks or terms. If you hold an eligible Max 5x, Max 20x or Team subscription, you may be able to claim separate monthly API credits under the October 2026 rollout; check Anthropic's help article for current eligibility.

Tips for managing API spend on a virtual card

  • Load credits in smaller amounts and use auto-reload only once your usage is predictable.
  • If you run multiple projects or ad-style workflows, Coinepay lets businesses issue a dedicated virtual card with its own spending limit — useful for keeping API spend separate from other costs.
  • Watch the balance and usage view under Settings > Billing so you aren't surprised by a failed call when credits run out.

FAQ

Is the Anthropic API a monthly subscription I pay for with a card?

No. The Claude API is usage-priced. Most organizations buy prepaid credits in the Claude Console and spend them against per-token prices. A monthly invoicing option exists but is arranged with Anthropic's sales team.

Where do I enter my Coinepay card in the Claude Console?

As an Admin or Billing user, go to Settings > Billing, choose Buy credits, and enter your Coinepay virtual card number, expiry and CVV. Use the pencil icon beside the payment method to update the card later.

Why did Anthropic decline my virtual card?

Possible reasons include insufficient balance, a billing address that doesn't match the card, incomplete 3-D Secure, an unsupported card origin or payment method, or a temporary technical issue. Issuing banks don't share the exact reason, so check each item and contact Coinepay support if it persists.

Will my billing address need to match my Coinepay card?

Yes. The billing address is tied to the payment method. Copy the address registered to your Coinepay card exactly as it appears in the app to avoid a mismatch decline.

Are the API credits I buy refundable?

No. Purchased API credits expire one year after purchase, can't be extended, and are non-refundable, so only load amounts you expect to use.
