To send money from abroad to someone’s Airtel Money wallet, you need their registered wallet number, their full name as registered, and the correct destination country. Coinepay Global Remittance lets you review the recipient’s payout amount, exchange rate and fees before confirming. This guide explains the mobile-wallet steps and what to check if the money does not arrive.
Where is Airtel Money used?
Airtel Money is a country-specific mobile-wallet service, not one account that works identically across borders. Examples include Uganda, where the local currency is the Ugandan shilling (UGX); Kenya, where it is the Kenyan shilling (KES); and Zambia, where it is the Zambian kwacha (ZMW). Select the country where your recipient’s Airtel Money wallet is registered—not the country where you are sending from. Check the Coinepay app for the payout methods offered for your chosen destination before starting.
An Airtel Money payout goes into a mobile wallet. It is different from depositing into a bank account or arranging cash pickup, even if the recipient could later use their wallet to access those services. The recipient’s wallet must be able to receive the transfer under local rules and Airtel Money’s requirements in that country.
What details do you need from the recipient?
- Destination country: Ask where their Airtel Money account is registered. A phone number’s country code is a useful cross-check, but do not use it instead of confirming the country with the recipient.
- Registered Airtel Money number or account ID: Ask for the number linked to the wallet. Use an account ID only if the Coinepay payout form requests one. For reference, Kenya uses the country code +254, Uganda +256 and Zambia +260. Enter the number in the format the form requests rather than assuming it accepts either a local number or a number beginning with +.
- Full registered name: Get the recipient’s full name exactly as it appears on their Airtel Money registration. Ask them to check it rather than relying on a contact nickname or an abbreviated name.
Before you confirm, send the details back to the recipient for a final check through a trusted channel. A single wrong digit can direct a transfer to the wrong number. Do not ask for the recipient’s Airtel Money PIN or one-time password; neither is needed to enter their payout details.
How to send to an Airtel Money wallet with Coinepay
- Sign in and complete any required checks. Open the Coinepay mobile app or 24/7 self-service dashboard. If you are new, register with Coinepay and follow the identity-verification steps shown for your account.
- Start a Global Remittance transfer. Choose to send money and select the country where the recipient’s Airtel Money wallet is registered. Enter the amount you want to send or the amount the recipient should receive, according to the options shown.
- Choose the mobile-wallet payout method. Select Airtel Money if it appears for that destination. Do not select bank deposit or cash pickup if the recipient expects the funds in their Airtel Money wallet. If Airtel Money is not listed, check with Coinepay support rather than choosing a different payout method without the recipient’s agreement.
- Enter the recipient’s details. Supply the registered wallet number or requested account ID and their full registered name. Follow the app’s instructions for the number format, then compare every digit and the name with the details the recipient provided.
- Review the transfer. Check the destination, payout method, recipient details and amount. Coinepay shows the exchange rate and fees before you confirm. Review the displayed amount the recipient is expected to receive, and make sure it meets their needs before proceeding.
- Confirm and track it. Confirm only when the details are correct. Keep the transfer reference shown by Coinepay and follow its status in the app or dashboard. If Coinepay asks for information or documents to complete a review, respond through its official channels.
Coinepay Global Remittance supports cross-border transfers to every country and region except jurisdictions under comprehensive sanctions, subject to applicable service availability and checks. That broad coverage does not mean Airtel Money is offered as a payout method for every destination or every sending route. The methods displayed for your transfer are the ones to follow.
How does the recipient know the money has arrived?
The recipient should check their Airtel Money wallet balance and transaction history using the service available in their country. They may also receive an Airtel Money notification or SMS when a wallet transaction is credited. Airtel Uganda, for example, says recipients of its domestic Airtel Money transfers receive an SMS identifying the amount and sender; do not assume every international payout produces that same message.
Ask the recipient to verify the credit in their wallet rather than relying solely on a text message or a screenshot sent by someone else. If Coinepay’s tracking shows the transfer is still being processed, share its current status with the recipient. If it shows completion but the recipient cannot find the credit, contact Coinepay support with the transfer reference and have the recipient check with their local Airtel Money support. The recipient should never share their PIN or one-time password with a sender or someone claiming to resolve a transfer.
Wallet verification and receiving limits
Wallet eligibility, verification requirements and receiving limits depend on the destination country and the recipient’s account status. A wallet that has not completed the identity checks required locally may be unable to receive a particular payout. A wallet may also be unable to accept a credit if it would exceed an applicable transaction or balance limit. Kenya, for example, has published mobile-money transaction and wallet-size limits, but the limit applicable to an individual wallet or international route may differ; do not treat a published national maximum as your recipient’s available capacity.
Before sending, ask the recipient to check that their Airtel Money wallet is active, appropriately verified and able to receive the intended amount. They can check their account status and applicable limits through their local Airtel Money service or support. Avoid assuming that verification levels or rules in Uganda, Kenya and Zambia are interchangeable.
Troubleshooting an Airtel Money transfer
Wrong wallet number
If you notice a mistake before confirmation, stop and correct it. If you have already confirmed, check the transfer status and contact Coinepay support promptly with the reference. Do not send another payment until you know what happened to the first. Airtel Zambia lists reversal options for its own services, but that does not establish whether a mistaken international payout can be recovered.
Name mismatch
Ask the recipient to confirm the full name registered to the wallet, including its spelling and order. If the transfer has not been confirmed, correct the entry. If it is already under way, give Coinepay support the transfer reference and follow its instructions; do not replace the name with someone else’s identity to get past a check.
Wallet limit reached or wallet not verified
Have the recipient check their current wallet status and applicable limits with Airtel Money in their country. They may need to complete a legitimate verification step or address a wallet restriction before they can receive funds. Do not split a transfer or use another person’s wallet to work around a limit or verification requirement. Ask Coinepay support what options are available for the existing transfer.
Compliance review or no visible credit
Cross-border transfers are subject to identity verification, sanctions screening and local regulations. Coinepay may request documents concerning the purpose of a transfer or source of funds. Check the status in your Coinepay account and provide requested information accurately through official channels. If the transfer is marked complete but the recipient still sees no credit, compare the confirmed wallet details with their registered account and contact support with the transfer reference. Transfers cannot be sent to sanctioned persons or jurisdictions under comprehensive sanctions, including Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Syria and the occupied regions of Ukraine.
