If you are in Ghana and a foreign website declines your card, the problem may be your bank’s international-payment settings rather than the website itself. A Coinepay virtual card gives eligible users card details for online checkout, but it does not override a merchant’s payment rules or regional restrictions. Here is how to get started, pay for an international service and investigate a decline.

Why a Ghana-issued card may fail on a foreign website

Ghana’s currency is the cedi (GHS, often shown as GH¢). When you pay a merchant abroad, your bank and the merchant’s payment processor may apply checks that do not arise with a domestic purchase. A decline can have several causes:

  • International or online payments are switched off. Some issuers require you to enable these transactions in your banking app or ask the bank to enable them.
  • The transaction exceeds an issuer setting. Your bank may apply online, foreign-currency or transaction-frequency limits. Check its current settings rather than assuming a domestic card limit also applies abroad.
  • Currency or regulatory checks apply. Issuers must operate within applicable foreign-exchange rules and their own policies. A card that works for one international purchase may not be approved for every type of transaction.
  • The merchant checks card eligibility. A website may restrict payments by customer location, billing country, card type or issuing region. A different card cannot make an ineligible account eligible.
  • Payment details do not match. An incorrect expiry date, security code or billing information can also trigger a decline.

If your existing bank card fails, ask its issuer for the decline reason before trying repeatedly. That helps distinguish a setting you can change from a merchant policy you must follow.

How to get a Coinepay virtual card in Ghana

First, check the Coinepay website or app to see which services are available to you in Ghana. Availability and eligibility can depend on your circumstances. You can manage Coinepay services through its self-service dashboard or mobile app on iOS and Google Play.

  1. Register using your real details. Start at Coinepay registration and provide the information requested for your personal or business account.
  2. Complete identity verification. Coinepay requires registration and identity verification before you use card services. Follow the document and identity-check instructions shown for your account; do not use somebody else’s documents or billing details. Bank of Ghana guidance also calls for identity checks when regulated institutions onboard customers, including through digital channels. The applicable documents and process depend on the customer’s status.
  3. Create your card if the service is available to you. Follow the card-creation steps in the dashboard or app. Coinepay issues virtual cards with a card number, expiry date and CVV that you can use at online checkout.
  4. Add funds using an option shown in your account. Check the available funding instructions in the app or dashboard and complete the steps there. Then confirm that funds are available for card spending before submitting a purchase. Do not assume that money visible elsewhere in an account is already available on the card.

Card issuance and fund services are provided by licensed partner financial institutions. If you cannot find an expected funding option or are unsure whether you can create a card, contact Coinepay support instead of relying on instructions for another card provider.

Use your virtual card at an international checkout

For an AI tool, software subscription or online store, create or sign in to your account on the service’s official site. Choose the product and any subscription terms there, then review the merchant’s current price, renewal conditions and supported countries. Prices vary by region; use the product’s official pricing page for the amount that applies to you.

  1. At checkout, choose a card payment option if the merchant offers one.
  2. Enter your Coinepay card number, expiry date and CVV exactly as displayed in your account.
  3. Enter your real name and billing details. If the merchant requests a billing country or address, provide information that truthfully describes you; do not select another country to bypass a restriction.
  4. Review the order, including its billing currency and whether it renews automatically, before confirming it. Complete any verification requested during checkout.
  5. Check both the merchant account and your Coinepay dashboard or app for the result. If the merchant does not show a completed order, do not assume that an attempted payment activated the service.

Keep enough funds available for future subscription renewals and review the merchant’s cancellation instructions if you no longer need the product. For an advertising account, check the platform’s billing settings and payment status as well as your card activity. Businesses using Coinepay can issue a dedicated virtual card for each ad account, such as a Facebook, Google or TikTok account, and set custom spending limits per card.

What might you pay for?

Common international online purchases for people and businesses in Ghana include AI tools such as ChatGPT, design software such as Canva, software subscriptions such as Microsoft 365, advertising through Google Ads or Meta Ads, and goods from international online shops. These are examples of services to investigate, not a promise that any particular merchant will accept a Coinepay card.

Before subscribing, check the service’s official terms for account availability in Ghana, accepted payment methods and any billing-country requirements. Some merchants restrict virtual cards, particular card types or cards issued in certain countries. If a merchant publishes such a restriction, follow it and contact Coinepay support to confirm whether your card meets the requirement before you buy. Do not change your stated location or identity to work around the merchant’s rules.

What Ghana’s foreign-currency rules mean for this task

Paying an overseas website is not the same as buying from a merchant in Ghana. In an October 2026 notice, the Bank of Ghana reminded the public that pricing and paying for goods and services in Ghana in foreign currency requires authorisation under the Foreign Exchange Act. A foreign-currency card or an international subscription does not mean a Ghanaian merchant may demand payment in a foreign currency.

Follow applicable rules and your payment provider’s requirements when making a cross-border purchase. If you are unsure whether a transaction is permitted, ask the relevant provider or a qualified adviser before paying. A card should be used for a genuine purchase that both the merchant and payment provider allow, not as a way around currency controls or other checks.

What to do if a payment is declined

  1. Read the checkout message. Note the exact wording, the merchant and the time of the attempt. Messages such as “payment declined” may not identify the underlying cause.
  2. Check available card funds. Confirm the amount available for card spending in Coinepay, particularly if you have just added funds. A balance elsewhere in an account is not necessarily a completed card payment.
  3. Check what you entered. Re-enter the card details carefully and make sure the billing information is accurate and consistent with your merchant account.
  4. Review the merchant’s rules. Look for restrictions on customer location, billing country, virtual cards or other card types. If the merchant does not accept the card, use another payment method the merchant permits.
  5. Check both accounts before retrying. Verify whether the merchant created an order or subscription and whether card activity appears in Coinepay. Avoid making repeated attempts without knowing the result.
  6. Ask for help with the details. If the reason remains unclear, contact Coinepay support with the merchant name, transaction time, amount and any error message. Do not send your full card number or CVV in an ordinary support message.

A decline from a Ghana-issued bank card and a decline from a Coinepay card may have different causes. Check the specific card and transaction involved, rather than assuming that the same remedy applies to both.

FAQ

Can I get a Coinepay virtual card while living in Ghana?

Check the Coinepay app or website for availability and eligibility in Ghana. You must register and complete identity verification before using card services.

Why does my Ghana bank card work locally but fail abroad?

International payments may be disabled, issuer settings may restrict the transaction, or the merchant may apply location or card-eligibility checks. Ask your bank for the specific decline reason.

Can I use a Coinepay card for ChatGPT or Google Ads?

You can try a card payment where the service offers one, but acceptance is determined by the merchant and its payment rules. Check its account and billing requirements before purchasing.

What should I do if my Coinepay card payment is declined?

Check available card funds, card and billing details, and the merchant’s payment rules. If it remains unclear, contact Coinepay support with the error message and transaction details, but not your full card number or CVV.
