You can use a Coinepay virtual card to enter card details at The Guardian’s online subscription checkout, but a completed payment depends on The Guardian’s checks and your card transaction being approved. This guide covers choosing a digital plan, signing up, checking the payment details, and responding to a declined card.

Choose the right Guardian option

The Guardian distinguishes a recurring Support contribution from its digital-access subscriptions. If you want subscription benefits, compare All-access digital and Digital plus rather than selecting Support by mistake. Digital plus adds the newspaper archive and digital magazines to the All-access benefits. Read the benefits shown for your region before paying.

The Guardian also lists a Student subscription, Guardian Weekly print subscription, UK Newspaper print subscription, and a separate Guardian Ad-Lite subscription. These are different offerings, not additional tiers of All-access digital. Print availability depends on the delivery location; this guide focuses on buying a digital subscription directly from The Guardian online.

Prices and introductory offers depend on the regional page and may change. For example, at the time of writing (October 2026), the US page listed regular rates of $18/month or $180/year for All-access digital and $28/month or $280/year for Digital plus. Promotional monthly displays may differ from those regular rates. Check The Guardian’s official pricing page for your region and the amount shown at checkout before committing.

What you need before checkout

  • A Guardian account: You will register or sign in during the online subscription process. Use an email address you can access for the confirmation message and future account management.
  • A Coinepay account ready for card services: Register with Coinepay and complete identity verification before using a virtual card. You can manage your card in Coinepay’s 24/7 self-service dashboard or mobile app.
  • Your virtual card details: Coinepay provides a card number, expiry date, and CVV when the card is issued. Retrieve the current details from your account rather than an old screenshot or saved browser entry.
  • Enough available funds: Check your balance against the amount actually due at checkout, including any applicable taxes or currency conversion. If you need details about funding or card limits, check the Coinepay app or contact Coinepay support.
  • Accurate personal and billing information: Enter your real identity and billing details. Choose the Guardian regional page that applies to you; do not use an invented address or another person’s details to try to pass checkout checks.

The Guardian Help Centre lists debit cards, credit cards, and PayPal as payment methods, with Direct Debit also available to UK residents. That list does not establish whether any particular virtual card will be accepted. If the checkout specifies an eligible card type or issuing-country requirement, contact Coinepay support to confirm your card meets it before you buy.

How to subscribe and pay

  1. Open The Guardian’s official subscription page. Select the page appropriate to your location and compare All-access digital with Digital plus. Check whether the displayed choice is monthly or annual and whether an introductory offer changes at renewal.
  2. Select your subscription. Continue to The Guardian’s online sign-up or checkout flow. Review the plan name carefully so you do not select a Support contribution or a separate print or Ad-Lite product when you intended to buy digital access.
  3. Create or sign in to your Guardian account. Enter your real account information and use an email address where you can receive the confirmation. If you already have an account, sign in rather than creating an unnecessary second one.
  4. Enter the Coinepay virtual card details. Copy the card number, expiry date, and CVV from your Coinepay dashboard or app into the corresponding card fields. Provide your real billing details in the format requested by The Guardian.
  5. Review before submitting. The Guardian’s checkout states the first-payment date; its checkout and confirmation email state the price and payment options. Confirm the amount due now, the billing interval, and any later regular rate. Complete any payment verification requested during checkout, then submit the payment once.
  6. Check the result. Look for The Guardian’s confirmation email and sign in to use your digital benefits. If the page stalls or the result is unclear, check your Guardian account and email before trying again so you do not accidentally place another order.

If you prefer to manage the card on your phone, Coinepay has an iOS app and an Android app. For a subscription you intend to pay with a Coinepay card directly at The Guardian, follow The Guardian’s online checkout rather than assuming an in-app purchase uses the same billing arrangement.

What to do if your card is declined

A decline does not, by itself, identify the cause. The Guardian’s subscription terms require accurate, current payment information and allow a subscription to be cancelled if payment is not received. Work through the checks below; do not repeatedly resubmit unchanged details.

  • Insufficient balance: Compare the available funds shown in Coinepay with the final checkout amount, not just a promotional headline price. Account for the displayed billing period and any applicable taxes or currency conversion. If the balance is too low, add funds using the options available in your Coinepay account and retry only after the balance updates.
  • Billing detail mismatch: Recheck the card number, expiry date, CVV, name, and billing address for typing errors. Use your real billing details and ensure they are consistent with the information associated with your payment account. Do not replace them with an address in another region to force a transaction through.
  • 3-D Secure or another verification step: If checkout requests authentication, follow the instructions presented and keep the payment page open until it returns a result. If the prompt does not appear, expires, or fails, check your Coinepay app for relevant transaction information and ask Coinepay support what happened. Do not assume authentication was completed merely because the card details were accepted.
  • Merchant region or card-eligibility checks: The Guardian displays different regional pricing pages, but its published information does not identify every country or card-eligibility rule that might apply at checkout. Confirm that you are using the correct regional offering and accurate billing details. If checkout states a specific card-type or issuing-country restriction, ask Coinepay support to confirm whether your card meets it; if the issue is Guardian account eligibility, contact Guardian customer service.

If the payment still fails, note the time, amount, plan, and any message actually displayed, then contact the appropriate support team. Share sensitive card information only through an official, secure support channel; do not send your full card number or CVV in an ordinary message.

Manage renewals, cancellations, and refunds

The Guardian’s Manage My Account area shows the next subscription payment date. Check it after sign-up and keep enough funds available before a renewal you want to continue. The Guardian says changing between payment methods requires contacting its customer service. If you need to replace an existing card, check the options in your signed-in account or ask Guardian customer service for the correct process rather than assuming a particular edit-card screen exists.

For All-access digital and Digital plus purchased directly from The Guardian, its subscription terms provide a 14-day cancellation period starting on the sign-up date, inclusive. If you cancel within it, you are not charged if you have not yet been billed, or receive a full refund if you have; access ends immediately. The terms say a refund is due within 14 days of notice. A later cancellation normally takes effect at the end of the paid monthly or annual period, without an ordinary cancellation refund, so cancel before renewal if you do not want another period.

The Guardian identifies Manage My Account → Cancel Support or contacting customer service as cancellation routes; UK and EU customers may also use the specified cancellation form. Check that the action shown in your account applies to the product you bought, and ask Guardian customer service if it is unclear. The digital-subscription terms also describe proportionate refunds in certain circumstances, including specified service changes or failure to provide the subscription. Those terms do not govern Support contributions, print subscriptions, or app-store purchases.

If you subscribed through Apple or Google instead of The Guardian’s online checkout, manage payment details, changes, and cancellation in the relevant store settings. The Guardian says its customer service does not manage those store-billed subscriptions and that cross-platform sharing of them is not supported.

FAQ

Is Support the same as a Guardian digital subscription?

No. Support is a recurring contribution. Choose All-access digital or Digital plus if you want the digital subscription benefits listed at checkout.

Can I use a Coinepay virtual card for The Guardian?

You can enter its card details at The Guardian’s online card checkout, but acceptance depends on the checkout requirements and transaction approval. Review any card-eligibility restriction before buying.

Why was my card declined at Guardian checkout?

Check your available balance, card and real billing details, any requested payment authentication, and regional eligibility. If the reason remains unclear, contact Coinepay support with the transaction time and amount.

Where do I manage a Guardian subscription bought through Apple or Google?

Manage its payment details and cancellation in the respective Apple or Google store settings, not through The Guardian’s direct-billing process.
